My trusty Arcam 73 CDP began to have problems reading discs.

I replaced the KSS 213 CL mechanism ,with a KSS 213C ( it was available in the same transport )

The lens mechanism shows a voltage requirement of 890 MV, whereas my previous 213CL was 421 MV

The player spins erratically and will not read on the high voltage, but works perfectly on the lower figure !

I know that supplying an overly high voltage is not advised, but what about too low?

Lower is better then low. Service manuals will also tell you to never touch those trimpots which adjusts laser focus and tracking. Too much power and the laser doesn't read properly and eventually you'll kill it. Too low a voltage supply and the laser will fail to recognise the disc properly.

It needs to be at a sweetspot. If your Arcam is having problem reading disc, clean the lens first using a cotton bud tipped in Windex glass cleaning solution or isoprophyl alcohol (90% grade or higher). Before touching the trimpots. Because if you ever mess up those trimpot settings you'll never get it back to normal again.

If you must change the voltage, try on a lower base line first, power spinner off after adjustment then power on and test. Repeat procedure till you hit a sweetspot with all discs being read. Remember for changes to take affect effectively, after every adjustment, power the player off then power it on.

Thanks for that.. I did not know about powering on and off between changes.

I had tried the cleaning routine before...changing the lens was a last resort, but I like the player and did not want to give up on it!

I have tried 4 discs so far. some copies...and all worked well. Sweet!
