Hi

I am looking at purchasing a basic projector setup.

Will be mainly used for blu-ray at night.

I have been looking at the BenQ W1070/+ and a 120" motorised 'the cable connection' screen.

Viewing distance is approximately 5m from the screen. Screen will be lowered in front of current TV.

I have measured up and the motorised screen will fit in pretty well.

Any suggestions, comments? I have read that I would be better off purchasing a better screen straight up, but these screens seem to have a good review.

I am sure I will update the projector within 2-3 years, but this is something to get the wife interested in home cinema. We have great audio, but the 60" pana screen isn't quite cutting it for viewing.

thanks

yes keep the current screen for general use watching tv, daytime use what ever.

and go the motorised screen for big screen viewing....no flat panel will come remotely close :) and you get the best of both worlds.

the benq for bang for buck is very very hard to beat and if getting into projectors to suck and see well worth it ... huge output so a large 120" screen would be no problem. just keep in mind benq are limited for throw and image shift so make sure you place projector correctly for size of screen going for.

yes if you intend upgrading projectors in a couple or so years I would suggest invest in a good screen. it would be kind of thing that lasts years on end while projectors might come and go. but a good screen might cost as much as your projector or quite a bit more so yes if limited by budget then a cheapy is ok just down expect to get much if anything for it if time comes to resell down the track :)

^^ all good advice.

I have the W1070ST+ projector with the same TCC screen in 100". I couldn't fit 120" because of a hifi rack.

A great, unbelievably affordable combination that is more than adequate for us watching movies and TV.

In fact with the expected life and affordability of the lamps, we did away with a TV altogether in this room and just use the projector exclusively.

As mentioned the lens shift is limited in adjustment, so like I did, do your calculations and make sure you can achieve the placement/positioning and size expected.

I purchased an Epson 8200 and projector is about 6.5m away and sitting 5.5m away throwing 100" - replaced a Sim2 which died and needed something long throw with lots of adjustment to fit in the same spot

lots of lens shift flexibility and a pretty good picture

most others didn't do the adjustment I needed nor the long throw and mounted up high at the rear of the room to be as unobtrusive as possible - so the Epson it was and pretty happy

Thanks guys for the replies.

I am a bit nervous - it looks like the projector will need to be in front of the sitting area by approximately 1.5m. We will be mounting to the roof and a little concerned about the light from the projector.

@@Marc do you have the short throw in front of the sitting area? If so, is the light created by the projector annoying?

Cheers

Yeah the projector is about 1.5m in front of the seating position and tucked up to the ceiling. There is a ceiling reflection but nothing that has bothered us in the slightest.

Have owned 3 epsons in the past with the 5500 and 9000 followed by the 9100. Hands down the most flexible in installation with throw and image shift. PQ wise a step up from the benq in my opinion but you pay for it in price as well !

Above or front of seating is not unusual for short throw projectors, have sat in a few rooms where the case. It's not a bother as long as projector is high out of sight. Otherwise can be a touch distracting. Probably worth making sure re vertical shift on the projector(can't remember if it had any) vs screen position vertically.

The bonus with short throw is brightness :)

What you gain in Brightness you loose in black levels....black levels are the foundation of picture quality so a matter of striking a balance :)
