MIKE.D79 Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 Hello to all. I have recently purchased a Sansui b-2101 power amplifier but I think is in need of a little TLC. I have done the basics like a soft bristled brush and vacuum cleaner to clean out the dust as best i could (it was obviously stored without any protection) and the attenuators were scratchy so gave a few a turns and then a very light spray with Servisol (seems to have fixed that minor problem). But that is the limit of my skills as amp technician, and just looking internally it seems it could use a professional clean and some of the solder joints look to have a brownish discolouration?? also noticed on the back wall (internally) what looked to be some oxidisation?? This is only visible on the actual cover itself and does not seem to actually be on any of the components?? apart from this the amp powers up no issue and seems to function "well" with all lights and VU meters functioning. But of course my MAIN question, is there anyone who could recommend someone in Perth to clean and service this amp?? Maybe even someone who specializes in Sansui's? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Mike.
pete_mac Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 The brown discolouration is likely to be flux from the soldering process. It's nothing to be particularly worried about. Do you have any photos, just to be sure? I very much like the sound of the B-2101/B-2102 amps. Was this the amp on Gumtree recently? If so, the price was fairly decent too.

Most likely you will have to replace the main filter caps as they leak and go low in value. cheers

Yes, bought from gumtree locally in perth. he had it on for $300 and I made an offer of $250 which he was happy to accept. cosmetically it is not in good shape and there was a fair bit of dust internally. I will take some photos today or tomorrow when I'm home from work. Cheers for the help, most appreciated.

No they usually develop bubbles under the rubber seal which may or may not be leaking but by that time they are usually on their way out because of their age. They will still work but just not like a set of new ones. You have to disconnect them and measure them and if they are down in capacity or the ESR has increased then they are on their way out. regards Edited October 19, 2015 by lemnoc
