Gratte Ciel, the aerial troupe had some great music playing during their performance. Here's one.

full review soon... Gratte Ciel, OMG! You wouldn't get me up there, brave souls! Did they have some great music, those tunes... at full volume! My partner feverishly shazaming them to find the artists!! Their final performance perfect as the closing act, we saw all four, absolutely gobsmacking!!

Extended electro swing from them on the last night, hey, that's Caravan Palace and Dunkelbunt they're playing!

Archichaut by Chinese Man, at the end of the feather storm, I'm tearing up just writing this! Playing it loud just doesn't do it justice, needs feathers and a monster PA at full tilt!

Hypnotic Brass Ensemble followed by Rodrigo y Gabriela  give a very different window in to music. Both acts very good in their own way.

Hypnotic on stage three, even better when when they weren't rapping, super tight brass! Funky as! Excellent sound even complimented the mixer myself!

Do you know which Caravan Palace song they played Ian? I didn't stay for the full performance.

We got back yesterday. One of the best family holidays we've had. Beautiful site, superb organisation, great music. And a lovely diverse crowd too - Australia at its best, my uncle observed. Lots of people drinking and I didn't encounter a single pissed ar$eh0le. Four long (hot) days and late nights makes it a bit of an endurance event, especially with kids in tow, but very rewarding. With so much on it's impossible to see it all. Some things you don't hear about until too late, other things clash and sometimes you just need to regroup in the cool of the shade or escort someone to the toilet or get some food or whatever. I feel like I missed a lot and I wasn't able to immerse myself into as many full performances as I would have liked. But it was still great. Some highlights:

Kamasi Washington—Just fantastic musicianship. Easeful and impassioned playing and great communication. My biggest 'pinch me' moment of the festival came, hanging at the back with the family, eating a Cuban beef wrap, when they launched into the 'Cold Sweat/Cherokee' mash-up. Two motherlode rhythms - one the foundation of funk, the other the thing that in my late father's memorable and probably tipsy phrase 'keeps the world spinning on its axis' - played together, just for us. Magical.

Tinariwen—This really hit the spot for me. The hand drumming, hypnotic repetitive bass, simple rhythm guitar, incisive bluesy leads and five voices blending as one in an unfamiliar tongue. It was propulsive and danceable but really 'head' music - deeply mediative and calming. I meant to buy a CD but they were sold out by the time I got round to it.

Thundercat—Astonishing virtuosity and a really nice vibe, with a big, diverse crowd coming together for the penultimate performance of the festival and getting into what was some pretty challenging music. Although if my 6 year old is any judge the emperor has no clothes: 'Thundercat SUCKS! Let's go home!'

Many more memorable moments—The feathers, (imagining robust discussions between the vegan and avante-gard factions of the organising committe regarding the inclusion of 'Place des Anges'), Jojo Abot's dancers, catching up with @mikey d for coffee, Bixiga 70, Pat Thomas... In the end though it was - like, say, bushwalking - more a cumulative sense of wonder and satisfaction that is more about the whole than any highlight or series of highlights. We'll definitely be back.

Yes indeed. Though looking at it again I think that sentence needs less more.

Thundercat's style? How's this? I'll take a stab at neo soul speed metal jazz funk with a tinge of yacht rock. Amazing bass player (six string) mate commented bet he's listened to every one of Jaco Pastorius' albums!

* * * * 1/2  Blick Bassy (unique Cameroonian singer at Taste The World, I had front row seat! More songs than hands on cooking, he was great!)

My two dark horse awards, that totally surprised me, going in knowing absolutely nothing about them beforehand, go to:

Blick Bassy and Violons Barbares

regards Ian

Just a heads-up that the Womadelaide app is available to download. Not much info at the moment, but the already announced acts are loaded.

Just make sure you bring some sort of breathing apparatus and eye protection.

We're planning in taking little Grizzly along for a day. More than that may be too much for a 5yo to handle. Probably the Sunday I reckon

He could easily handle the weekend if it isn't too hot. The WoZone is your friend, they'll keep him busy.

Quite probably, but fitting it all around work and such can be difficult. Plus the cost for the full weekend is not insignificant even only for 2 of us.

If you are planning on getting tickets just prior to the event, Grizzly, keep an eye on ebay or Gumtree. There's usually some good deals to be had there with people selling tix cheap due to circumstances that prevent them from attending. Quite often you can save close to 50%.
