We are having an 'open day' this Friday for people to pop in, listen to music and grab a cool drink before attending WOMAD. We aren't far from the festival site - 5 min drive or 15 min walk. We have supported WOMAD for many years through the Hackett Foundation, it would be great to see some SNAer's faces!

I find I'm often more attracted to what is happening on the smaller stages rather than the big stadium acts.

The two guys from Rwanda, The Good Ones, were definitely a highlight for me. A very simple, quite basic performance, but there was just something rather special about it. I saw both their performances, first in the Frome Park Pavilion, then later on the Moreton Bay Stage, which was the better setting for their music. Mr V only had two copies of their CD on display in the Woshop when I looked on Friday evening. I bought a copy before I had even heard them, and am not disappointed.

This looks like the same link on the Womadelaide website.

I've followed DakhaBrakha since seeing them last time they played Womad here, and their sound has developed significantly. Sophisticated and distinctly Ukrainian. I also really enjoyed the energy of Dubioza Kollektiv (as did the whole family!) plus the soul of Auris (well worth a listen at home, my daughter was quite enamoured of his French/Creole "rapping"), plus the tight groove of Cymande. 2 other favourites were Mildlife and a brief listen to Druid Fluids (with the son of a long-standing SNA member on drums). Yes the heat meant that excursions from the shade were limited, so we saw less than we otherwise would, but still a great weekend!

Little G was also a big fan of Ibibio Sound Machine, waiting to meet their absolutely delightful front woman later that evening for a hug, signature, photo and quick chat!

Over the three full days we based ourselves in the air conditioned comfort of SA Art Gallery before braving the heat around 4pm. Friday was OK with the 6pm start.

Managed to catch full or in a few cases partial sets of:

some faves:  * to  * * * *

Fri:

* * * * Dakha Brakha

love this Ukrainian band!

* Mauskovic Dance Band

* * * Dubioza Kolectiv

more Balkan madness!

* *  Mildlife

perhaps a little too mellow at times, sounding a little like Meddle era Floyd

Sat:

* * * * Hollie Cook

great lover's rock reggae

* Budos Band

a little rough round the edges

* * * Ibibio Sound Machine

* * Cambodian Space Project

* * * * Leenalchi

a real surprise, alt rock outa Korea!

* * * * Arooj Aftjab

sensational!

* * Seun Kuti and Egypt 80

i've seen him several times over the years, doesn't quite have the charisma of his late father

Sun:

* * * WITCH

* * * * Yussef Dayes

powerhouse drummer from the UK new jazz movement accompanied by a sax supremo

* * * * Moonlight Benjamin

fantastic performance, I was in the "moshpit", Moonlight magnetic.... and those two guitarists!

* * * Baaba Maal

respect to a legend

* * * * Emel Mathlouhi

superb vocals combined with some big electronic beats and..... string accompaniment!

Mon:

* * * * Son Rompe Pera

super lively set from these Mexican madmen, masters of the punk marimba sound, they threw in some cumbia for good effect, it's a wonder they didn't self combust in the heat, a crowd favourite

* * * * Angelique Kidjo

she always delivers, such a livewire performer!

* * * * Cymande

super tight funk from reformed 70's UK band, now they're getting their deserved recognition at last.

* Morcheeba

Al-Qasar

* * * * Black Jesus Experience with special guest Aurus

Melbourne's own hybrid Ethio jazz exponents synched so well with vocalist Aurus from Reunion

* * * Pongo

finishing off the last act injected some fun on the smaller zoo stage, afro funk hybrid out of Angola via Lisbon. Three little kids didn't believe their luck being invited up to dance with her.

* * Braxe and Falcon

as is tradition a last drink before fronting up to closing DJ set, meet up at the mixing desk, say goodbye to our friends and regulars then head back to our accommodation exhausted.

24 acts over 4 days! Till next year!

regards Ian

Grizzly and I do each year. We also commented that a couple of years back there was a meeting of a few diehards at one of the internal Womad bars.  Yes, to next year.

Next year we really do need to have a StereoNet catchup for those attending!

It seems all info has disappeared. I'll check back in and post a link when it's up and running again.

No doubt we’ll have a few “old reliables”  it takes a few later announcements to reveal some new and interesting acts. Guessing other acts it pays to keep an eye on overlapping festivals (Port Fairy and Golden Plains) and who’s touring Oz around the same dates for their announcements.
