It's Happening

Dear Martin

We are delighted to share with you the good news that we know so many of you have been waiting to hear -

WOMADelaide will go ahead in 2021!

Presented in a 're-imagined' COVID-safe format, the 2021 edition of WOMADelaide will feature a remarkable selection of Australian headline artists across four sunset concert evenings in a spectacular arena and stage we are creating in the picturesque King Rodney Park / Ityamai-itpina.

While a departure from the multi-stage format we've all grown to love, we are very much looking forward to bringing you this joyful (and safe!) celebration of WOMADelaide’s 29-year history and Adelaide’s renowned summer festivals season. A strictly limited number of reserved seating tickets for each evening concert alongside the exciting 2021 artist lineup will be announced shortly.

Thank you all for your collective patience, support and understanding so far in a challenging year. As a WOMADelaide subscriber, you will be the first to gain exclusive presale access to tickets before they go on sale to the general public, so watch this space!

Yes indeed, received the email this morning.

Can't say I find this format very appealing.

I have already seen some of those performers at previous Womadelaides. Nothing against them, but I thought the organisers might have been able to draw on a bit more diversity from within this country's multi-ethnic communities. I see just one African performer, nothing from Asia or India. I guess they have gone for a few well known names to get the ticket sales.

Still not enough information on the website. I would like to see a bit more detail about the program. Would like to know how long each concert will be. And what is Platinum, Premium, A Reserve and B Reserve (don't know how that fits with zones A, B C)? I worked out that if I bought B Reserve tickets for each evening (without concession), it would probably cost a bit more than the usual 4 day pass, quite a bit more if I choose any of the other options. I guess the thing is to decide whether I am interested enough in buying a one night ticket only. Not sure that I am at this stage.

Looks like they are in a 'holding pattern' to tide them over next year, in the hope that things might improve after that. I understand why they have to do that, but it takes too much away from the event.

It's back!!! Woohoo!!!

Just received an email from WOMADelaide that the show is back, in full swing, at Botanic Park next year.

First line-up announcement will be on November 11.

I'd say it'll be a mostly Oz affair, wonder just how many international acts will appear? A few from NZ for sure.

Yeah, if you read the small print, it states predominantly Australian acts.

Sent them a long list, Oz has some outstanding acts that are ideally suited to Womad exposure. Do they ever take heed, probably not. Here's just one that deserves a slot!

I definitely agree with that, there is a lot they could do to give exposure to some of these acts that many people would not be familiar with, and I think it would be a good way to start getting Womad back on track. I really hope that they don't just focus on a few big names that everybody knows.

The late Ethiopian legend Alemayehu Eshete & Melbourne based Ethio jazz the Jazmaris @ Arts Centre 9th January 2016, the Jazmaris worthy of a place at Womadelaide 2022!

I suppose we are fortunate to have a line up at all with the current restrictions....

second announcement may give us some more left of field contenders

Accepting that they are going to have to lean heavily on Aus acts, there's quite a lot I'd be happy to see in the first announcement.

I've had a look at the initial Womadelaide 2022 program, there are a few acts there I am interested in seeing. There is a good chance I will attend, but would like to see the full program first.

Another act, Springtime, confirmed for Womadelaide.

This new endeavour brings together three renowned musicians each known for distinct styles and sounds - Gareth Liddiard (The Drones, Tropical F**k Storm); Jim White (Xylouris White, Dirty Three) and Chris Abrahams (The Necks). Their self-titled debut album is a blend of art rock, experimental noise, poignant lyricism and jazz improvisation that paints portraits of a paralysed world; of “guitar fuzz and piano that gradually whips itself into an apocalyptic frenzy” - Stereogum.

I'm quite interested in Chikchika, Ausecuma Beats, Elephant Sessions (haven't I seen them before?) and Victor Martinez Parada.

The Cat Empire are a predictable inclusion, but they don't really excite me. A bit too much hip-hop creeping into a few of the other acts for my liking, but I think there is probably still enough on the program to draw me in.
