Thats so ghetto looking. Are they meant to be separated like that or do you intend to put them together later?

Define "ghetto" so as I understand.

I just spent 16 weeks building a bass trap/filter treated ceiling with the fit out and furnishings and further frequency selective treatment to follow, had Paul Spencer last week for 2 days and had the set up a week, still a bit of dust about.

:)

The Battery Rig is in the other end of the room, so I guess it is like a ghetto of electronics hardware  :P

Taming the beast:

My DIY Beyma 12" concentric speakers, in a compact 33ltr ported box, have real potential but it has taken me a long time to workout their strengths and weaknesses. I will not bore you with the details of the extended journey to get to where I am but would like to relate what I have now, a good sounding well balanced high efficiency speakers. I still have to use the stereo sub-woofers as these speakers do not go really low. But it all works very well together and with separate sub-woofers and their own amps I can craft a balance between deep bass and the rest of the audio spectrum.

Firstly the tweeter section Xovers at 1600hz, originally 2K. The tweeter has a 3rd order Xover (originally second) and the bass a 2nd order (originally 1st). Like a number of highly efficient speakers cone brake-up (shouting) can occur if the bass cone handles too higher frequencies. Crossing low and rolling off steeply stopped that.

The tweeter is 105db  efficient the woofer 98. With my three DIY tube amps; 6V6, EL84 and 300B padding the tweeter by -4db sounded really good. I have been amp rolling for a while now between my new EL84, Tripath T4 Class D (or T) and IRS2092 Class Ds. These amps are extremely detailed and with the tweeter being Titanium it was all far too bright. The 180W Tripath amp is very analogue sounding and only required a tweeter pad of -7db for an excellent balance between bass and treble. But the IRS2092 required a -9db pad! It is far more Class D sounding; crisp, sharp and bright.

So now I have a small cluster of resistive pads with bare alligator clips which only take a minute to clip on or off or change to provide the right balance between bass and treble. I only need to do with when I change an amp. It has taken quite a few months to bring about these changes but the balance is excellent now and all the work has been worthwhile.

So far the best sounding combo is the T4 (Audiophile) with the Beymas (VoXConcentriC)

post-104767-0-24514700-1450072176_thumb.might have to visit "the Ghetto" at Burnie one day , love the dispersion of the PSE , heard a early prototype...agree with MwH on amplification on efficient speakers...in my many years of being in this game , definitely the most underrated amp is EL 84 based and P/P well done appears to have a bit more control...also "chip" amps seem to love that type of speaker...mine 99 db , RedWineAudio with a yummy Siemens as a buffer...just nice music...

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.......... I have OCD (I am told), vinyl will get me divorced :emot-bang:;)

In all seriousness, I am very happy with the sound I get from the set up now, very analoguesque with great dynamics.

Not saying it wouldn't sound great by any means. It's just that tube folks tend to favour vinyl that's all :)

The question is, why is the horn positioned behind the bass unit, in real time and why is the 18" Eminence Magnum bass unit in the cement corner ?

Don't get me wrong all I meant to say was that it all looked unusual, unique and niche. Certainly nothing mainstream or commercial about it.

There is absolutely nothing in that room I can "buy" tomorrow in Tasmania, with the acception to the 240v Clipsal personal surge protector and some 240v cables.

Two friend have very extensive systems, CD and vinyl collections and extremely extensive systems. In both cases thier analogue setup trumps thier CD setup. By a mile.

I have both formats, both with good equipment.

They sound different. One is not better than the other.   :hijacked:  Depending on my mood,my preferences change

I have lower end commercial speakers (especially compared to the stuff you guys have). But 1w/96db/1m Cerwin Vega E312.

Running them at high levels on under powered amp breaks them - i can confirm that. When the woofer comes back from repair (i hope this week), i have new (restored) crossovers ready to go in and a 120w (min) yamaha power amp that is freshened up by Dallas Clark at the moment...should be capable of 115db without breaking anything...i only use them for playing live/rock and we started putting some movies through them.

After reading the spec again, they are actually 98db/1w.

Got the power amp back, got the driver back, installed newly refurbed crossovers and man, for an ugly speaker without a big rep, they really sound great!

Not possible.

  • Both your posters aren't straight
  • Your photo isn't straight
  • Your remote isn't in line with the front of your CDP
  • There's a wire hanging at an angle behind your Hello Kitty, annnnnnnnd....
  • Your right speaker is further from the rear wall than is the left speaker.

Those with OCD unite, please stand in a straight line, shortest to tallest, in alphabetic order and all face forward.

My OCD has me building the most detailed and neatest audio gear - amps, preamps, phono preamps, speakers, etc. I raise a glass to OCD. If it was beer it would be in a chilled Peroni frosted glass, if white wine, a cut crystal fine stem Waterford, if red wine .......
