VA50 Posted November 23, 2015 Posted November 23, 2015 (edited) Had some family members ask me to help them drag some speakers out of storage and set them up for them with their new receiver. I go into the shed and find a set of jvc- fs100's. They told me they bought them new in the early 80's and that they were expensive. They were under the assumption that they are electrostatic speakers but they look like something else to me. Anyone know anything about them? google doesn't show much other then them being planar speakers. Edited November 23, 2015 by VA50
collektor Posted November 23, 2015 Posted November 23, 2015 They are Magnaplanar speakers. They have magnetized mylar panels. Incredible soundstage. They are bipole speakers so that you can listen to them from in front or behind with no sound quality deterioration. They are worth restoring, servicing and keeping. They are well made and the magnets, that are attached to each of the individually mounted mylar panels, should still function as originally intended if they have been in storage all this time. All the frequencies are produced at the same time. You could email JVC directly, in Japan and ask for some information about them. 1
VA50 Posted November 24, 2015 Author Posted November 24, 2015 I would really love to restore them and give them a run on a decent amplifier. Unfortunately they will be living the rest of their life out on a rubbish sherwood unit. Even in that state i can tell they have the potential to sound incredible. These ones don't sound so great from behind which i think is largely due the the panels blocking the sound. Would love to find my own pair of them one day to have a play with. They are quiet interesting.
