I love the look of Ti bikes. A friend has one I think it's a Litespeed or Lynskey but it has these funky twisted tubes everywhere. Looks great!

The twisted tubing is on the Lynskey Helix, i have a friend with one and it's an awesome bike.

A very open question but here goes.

Are the cheaper indoor trainers worth buying? What do you recommend for cold wet winter days, when getting on the bike and riding out doors is not very inviting?

There are only a few variables in the lower end of town.

1. Keep your rear wheel on and your tyre runs on a roller with resistance vs remove your rear wheel and the bike fits onto a cassette on the trainer.

2. Magnetic vs hydro vs electronic resistance

3. Noise.

I have an older Elite Crono Hydro Mag which to me at the time, and still represents a great compromise of the above.

1. I leave my rear wheel on which means I can make use of the powertap in my hub. This also means no fussing with wheel removal. however it does mean more wear and tear on your rear tyre, and after a solid 2 hours session (which is not too often) the rear tyre can cop quite a beating.

2. Purely magnetic resistance feels like crap, but it is adjustable for resistance. Of course for more resistance you just need to shift up a gear generally, but this may not be enough once you start building up some strength. My Elite is a combination of Magnetic and Hydraulic, so it feels more lifelike (fluid) but also has variable resistance. Anything with electronic resistance is not going to meet your criteria of "cheaper".

3. Generally the wheel-off machines are noisier (the Lemond in particular is apparently really loud). My elite is pretty quiet, and I watch movies, listen to music, take phone calls (sort of!) etc. while riding.

I have recently been using a top of the line Kickr (RRP $1500) at my LBS as I am the guinea pig for his new line of machines. It is pretty quiet and has amazing ability to link with computer-based programmes to compete against others around the world like an MPG, but it only feels a little better than my Elite in actual road feel, so I am guessing that my old machine is actually quite good.

To summarise, look for something that has a good feel to encourage riding (not purely magnetic resistance) and is not too noisy and is within budget. They are a great way to work out and during the winter I use them a LOT with a huge gain in performance. They say 1 hour on the ergo is like 2 on the road because there is never any coasting. I dispute that claim and think it's more like 2:3 but still.

Depends how long you want to ride but I reckon after 10 minutes you get into the ride and put up with the weather. But having said that my non existent motivation of late makes a tree sloth look like a workaholic ice addict. Best take Jakes advice on board.

a little OT as this is not "cheaper" but

I use this german made spin bike

really like it together with the various programs - set up a cheap telly and you're away

N+1 they say. :)

Just picked up a 2nd hand hardtail for multipurpose duties, namely camping/commuting/towing the kids, as well as a bit of local bush bashing. I am keen to see how it goes in the trails down the road that I know so well.

Lazy ass. He didnt pedal even once.

At least he learned to avoid non-slippery landings like:

Did the Humevale climb for the first time yesterday from Bundoora and back, approximately 77 km return trip.

It wasn't as had as I was expecting, but is was a challenge completed. :)

Back on the bike, after suffering a knee injury for a month and depression for over a year.

Really good to be rolling again.

Well done @ "peacewise ". I bet the legs feel it atm.

I've been off the bike for 6weeks and won't be back on it for yet another 4weeks so I'm worried I'll suffer. BUT, the fun of riding will quickly overcome my weaknesses and being out and about is so good for the body AND mind. Take care

We're on holidays at the moment and I managed a PB distance of 142 km a few days ago, with a bit over 1,000m of climbing. If it hadn't started raining, been getting dark, and with a roast on for tea I would have kept going, it was one of those good days where you just feel great :-)

Regards,

SS

Been a while since I took this beauty out for a spin.

It confirms a few things:

I love wide bars

I love dropper posts

I love wide tyres

None of which were present today!

What are dropper posts? Don't have them on my roadies.

Allows you to hang your backside out; long, and low :)

My dream brand, but I'd be after a gravel grinder. Those bars look sufficiently wide to me, my bars on the dually look narrower. I too must get a dropper post, but I don't ride the Pivot enough to justify throwing money at it.
