Bass is a strange thing, never really acts the way you expect. That balance between impact, speed, detail and weight is difficult. I think the use of a subwoofer can allow you to move the weight requirement to a second unit, enabling you to meet the other parameters more easily.

Glad to hear you have been able to remove some room treatment as well, very easy to blunt and dull a system, music needs impact!

After all the commotion I am very glad to hear that your system is delivering satisfaction, that is the whole point after all.

Looking good too!

Nicest fullsome racks I have seen in a while. Fantastic room, all business with a modicum of comforts. Love it.

The room looks awesome Tbells, must sound great.

One day my vinyl collection might be that big............  :P

I'm gonna be rifling through your Kate Bush Collection when I make it over there...

Great room and system mate. But do you think the speakers are getting a bit lost in there? Perhaps a second pair might help fill the room a bit better.

Cheers

As the old saying goes  "what goes around, comes around" and alas after many months of experimentation im back to the old layout having the speakers along the long wall.

This came with a host of issues however as the additional record rack I installed since I last had this arrangement meant my gear could no longer be situated next to the JBL's so I had to build a new wall shelf for the turntable and at this point have placed the amp [audiophile purists turn away now] on top of the speaker.

Sounds bloody good though, much BIGGER sound than before (in my pseudo headphone arrangement) and a soundstage so wide  it makes you move your head from side to side checking out everything that's going on. Also as everything's so damned cramped at the moment  my usual turntable lamp was switched back to my smaller old LED one that I piffed as the stupid switched mode power supply it came with injected too much noise into the system so to get around the issue im now powering it from a 12v  sealed lead acid battery.

Lets see how this goes for a while....

Finally finished the JBL restoration yesterday with the last finishing touches on the French polish. Although my cabinets were in much better overall condition than many others I've seen there was still evidence of there 25 year studio service life the worst being a rear crushed corner. Managed to fix by steaming it back into shape and along with a ton of sanding they came up great.

Really happy with the result as I was thinking of re-veneering them at one stage but now I can keep them completely original (all changes I have made so far can be 100% reversed if required). All drivers re-coned with OEM originals by someone from the Melbourne Aûdio club to correct the previous repair where the tech glued he surround to the front face of the cone rather  than take the time and clean up the back and do it properly.

Also as you can see in the pic's been playing around with positioning of the speakers and think this spot is better than where they were on the opposite wall however as always it's a compromise and I'll now likely burn my butt with my back to the fireplace although it is nice to see the trees and shrubs in the garden from the window while listening.

They have come up beautiful Doug.

The Feast Watson fine buffing oil is also a goodie.

Cheers mate, used the FW Tung Oil along with the wax but wasn't 100% happy with the finish which is why I decided to give the French polish a crack as I wanted to highlight the grain a little more and man was it an experience. I now know why there are dedicated French polishing courses as it was an absolute PITA! Reckon I did over 20 coats before I was happy, very delicate procedure of correct contact pressure, right amount of thinners (alcohol) and speed. If you weren't careful you'd burn through the previous coats in a second or two.

Anyway all I got to do now is find one more grill (mine was missing one) and they'll be complete. Currently spinning some Judas Priest and it's like they've been invited into my living room......better go grab some more beer for them!

They look great. I always go with French Polish/Shellac these days.

What Judas Priest record are you playing?
