rollo Posted February 7, 2016 Posted February 7, 2016 Like it says. What have you installed in your system that changed the game more than anything else.. Speaker, component, tweak, power conditioning, cables ?? charles
Juicester Posted February 7, 2016 Posted February 7, 2016 I'd be surprised for people who HAVE done it, if 'room treatments' don't get the nod. For those that haven't, I'll take a stab between speakers and source. If anyone says that cables made a bigger difference than amp, source speakers or room treatments - I suspect they are raving lunatics... 4
dirktoggler Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 I just saw the REL sub for sale in the classifieds and remembered how big an improvement that bought my set up. Maybe not a game changer, but enough to put thoughts of upgrading the speakers aside.
Al.M Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 (edited) Usually say to people speakers as these have the hardest job in the system to convert the electrical info into sound energy and make it to your ears in one piece. Once the physical sound transfer makes it to the auditory/brain department its anyone's guess what might happen but healthy ears, experience, knowledge and hopefully logic will be able to decipher what's happening. Among speakers there are vast differences in size, shape, genre etc. Just my subjective guess but in descending order generally 70% speakers, 20% amps, 10% sources and cables (2-5%). It gets very personal, psychology and biased depending on how much emotion and owner pride you invest on some things as to the true value and difference weighting one might apply to this vs reality. Over-laying all of this is room acoustics and quality of recorded sources. Edited February 8, 2016 by Al.M
rollo Posted February 8, 2016 Author Posted February 8, 2016 For me the room treatment and speaker placement was a game changer. The system is well thought out using components that have synergy. Then tweaks such as power conditioning three dedicated 20Amp circuits was a game changer. However to date leaving the room out are the Magic tubes and black Discus devices from the Madscientist. The transparency wrought is truly unbelievable. 3D sound stage, better focus, imaging and that live presence. Live recordings just sound more live than before. So tweaking after all is in place room and component wise can be a game changer. For components the BSG QOL is the game changer of ALL times. IMHO. One would have to rip it out of my dead cold hands. charles
awayward Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 I have upgraded 3 components to 3-4 times the price of the outgoing component, DAC, power amplifier and speakers. Surprisingly the amplifier produced the biggest improvement. 1
danrey Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 Depends, normally would say speakers. But if the speakers require high current and the amp does not supply enough, then an amp can make a big difference. After that, a sub made a big difference for me with bookshelf speakers.
darth vader Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 I dont think I've had any "game changers", more been a progression of upgrades. Add something new, assess if its been an improvement or not, keep or move on accordingly. A good amp helps, good cart in a phono stage, and speakers. But the best improvements seem to come from room tweaks.
