Stripping away traditional components like a tonearm and manual speed adjustments, the PP-1 is as much an artistic statement as it is a functional audio device. Milled from a solid aluminium block, its monolithic appearance evokes vibes straight out of 2001: A Space Odyssey, with its fusion of raw minimalism and advanced digital technology.

Unlike conventional turntables, the PP-1 eliminates the need for a tonearm. Instead, users place their vinyl records upside down, and the device takes care of the rest. We're told the device features a built-in sensor that automatically detects the record's speed, whether 33 or 45 RPM and adjusts playback accordingly for optimal sound quality.

For those who prefer a more hands-on approach, a small knob provides the option to manually switch between speeds or activate the automatic detection feature. Additionally, a second knob offers multiple functions, including play, pause, track selection, and volume control, enhancing the overall user experience.

A key feature of the PP-1 is its ability to play music directly through headphones, suggesting that it includes an internal phono preamp and headphone amplifier. An external amplifier is still required for those looking to connect passive speakers.

Waiting For Ideas says it has designed the PP-1 with a focus on performance as much as aesthetics. The studio claims the solid aluminium body provides a striking appearance and ensures stability and resonance control - crucial for high-quality vinyl playback.

Another unique design element is its ability to stand upright while playing records. The record remains securely in place, spinning horizontally against the structure, adding a striking visual element to the listening experience. For this writer, at least, it evokes memories of the Technics SL-V5 or Sharp RP-114 from the 80s, albeit with a much sleeker, minimalist approach!

The PP-1 turntable is available now and will be made to order. Indeed, its unconventional approach makes it one of the most intriguing turntables to hit the market in recent years, offering a balance between design, technology, and usability. While it may not appeal to traditionalists who prefer manual control and 'tweakability' of traditional turntable elements such as tonearm, cartridge, and plinth, its effortless operation and design appeal could attract a new audience of vinyl enthusiasts.

PP-1 lists at €5,800, and a €2,900 deposit is required for direct orders from Waiting for Ideas.
