Astell & Kern Updates A&Norma; SR25
Astell&Kern unveils its second-gen A&norma SR25, ultra-portable hi-res audio player.
Astell&Kern's A&norma SR25 MKII is the second iteration of the award-winning entry-level digital audio player (DAP). We are told that the company has consciously kept the admired aspects of the original while improving audio performance.
Firstly, the A&norma SR25 MKII benefits from a 4.4mm headphone jack which promises to deliver enhanced dynamic range, bass response, wider soundstage, clearer imaging and more detail in the audio source. This, of course, joins the 2.5mm (balanced) and 3.5mm (unbalanced) outputs, resulting in a greater choice for headphones and IEMs.
Astell&Kern players apply shield cans to eliminate electromagnetic interference caused when internal components are in operation. The SR25MKII boasts highly conductive, hyper-pure silver plating on the existing shield cans for extra defence against these sound performance-effecting disturbances, as first used in the upper-tier A&ultima SP2000T.
The SR25 MKII supports native playback of DSD256 and 32-bit/384KHz PCM high-resolution audio and offers LDAC and aptX HD high-definition Bluetooth wireless codecs.
The SR25 MKII also adds Replay Gain functionality to the mix. This automatically and uniformly adjusts volume playback from sound sources up to 24-bit/192 kHz, so playlists can be enjoyed throughout without reaching for the volume.
Also appearing on the A&norma SR25 MKII is AK File Drop that enables easier file transfers, making it possible for you to wirelessly transfer files from a PC, smartphone, or FTP program located on the same network.
Finally, there has been a refresh of the SR25's design that sees a new, more defined pattern on the side volume wheel, and the original's Moon Silver finish has given way to Mercury Dark Silver.
Also available is a case made from LASKINA polyurethane leather-like fabric from Italy. We're told that this memory material offers protection against external shocks and scratches while providing excellent grip.
The Astell&Kern A&norma SR25 MKII is priced £699/ €799 and will be available early November, as will the Astell&Kern A&norma SR25 MKII case in Denim Blue, Orange or Black, priced at £59/ €69.

applause awards
Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.
Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.
The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.
We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
