ATC SCM20ASL 2-way Active Standmount Speakers Launched

ATC's new SCM20ASL, which has been proclaimed "the ideal choice for modestly sized rooms," promises "outstanding musical reproduction."

The SCM20ASL, based on ATC's 50th-anniversary Limited Edition design, becomes the British brand's most compact active model.

The 2-way SCM20ASL features ATC's in-house drive units with matched amplification, which results in optimal fidelity, according to the company.

The ATC SCM20ASL sports a 20-litre standmount cabinet that houses a proprietary 150mm (6-inch) Super Linear Mid/Bass driver and 25mm (1-inch) 'S-Spec' dual-suspension tweeter, powered by onboard class A/B MOSFET power amplifiers capable of delivering a claimed 200W and 50W continuous power to the bass and HF drivers respectively. The manufacturer adds that each amplifier's performance and power output are carefully tailored to driver demands and the musical elements they reproduce.

We're told that the mid/bass driver employs a large (75mm/3-inch) voice coil and short-coil (long-gap) motor assembly featuring ATC's 'SL' motor tech, said to reduce distortion from the upper bass into the midrange. This is paired with ATC's 25mm 'S-Spec' soft-dome tweeter, which marries a dual suspension design with a high-energy 2.1-tesla motor. ATC says this results in an extended response well beyond 20kHz alongside exceptional reproduction of fine detail.

Crossovers are active, analogue 2nd-order Linkwitz-Riley operating at line-level. An all-pass filter is included to "optimise the phase response" through the crossover region, resulting in far improved tonal balance and imaging.

Around the rear, you'll find balanced XLR input and controls for input sensitivity and low-frequency shelf cut and boost. The input sensitivity control allows you to tailor the input gain to suit your source and pre-amplifier combination for more consistent performance. Meanwhile, the low-frequency shelf control enables adjustment of the bass response.

The SCM20ASL cabinet combines bracing for stiffness and damping to suppress resonance and is available in a wide range of real wood veneers, painted satin finishes and high gloss lacquers. Standard finishes include Cherry, Black Ash, Walnut and Oak veneers and Satin Black or Satin White paint. Premium finishes include Rosewood, European Crown Cut Walnut, Burr Magnolia, Pippy Oak, and Burr Poplar veneers. The speaker has a removable grille wrapped in black acoustically transparent cloth.

The new SCM20ASL makes its global debut at the Axpona show and will be available from April 2025. Suggested pricing starts at £6,495 for standard finishes and £7,295 per pair for premium finishes. Add £1,595 for high-gloss lacquer over veneer. Those preferring Piano Black or White will pay £7,845, while custom finishes can be discussed. Regional pricing has yet to be confirmed.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
