Audio-Technica’s ATH-R30x Brings Studio Clarity Home

Audio-Technica has announced the availability of the ATH-R30x, the latest addition to its R-Series of open-back studio headphones.
Designed as a step up from the entry-level R70x, the new ATH-R30x aims to offer greater resolution and detail, with a neutral tuning suited for critical listening, mixing, and mastering.
The ATH-R30x features an open-back design that allows for a more natural and spacious soundstage—ideal for users who prioritise accurate imaging and sonic transparency over noise isolation. Building on the success of the R70x, this new model adopts a similar lightweight profile while integrating a newly developed 45mm driver, which the company says delivers improved linearity and articulation across the frequency range.
According to Audio-Technica, the ATH-R30x has been engineered to bridge the gap between the accessible R-Series models and more premium studio offerings. Its tuning leans toward a flat, uncoloured response, with a focus on midrange clarity and transient precision—traits valued by audio engineers and musicians alike.
In terms of comfort, the ATH-R30x includes upgraded earpads and headband padding, while the housing design has been optimised to minimise unwanted resonance. The headphones ship with a 3-metre detachable cable and a standard 6.3mm screw-on adapter, making them suitable for use across studio and home environments.
Audio-Technica is positioning the ATH-R30x as a versatile monitoring solution that can also handle casual audiophile use thanks to its open, airy presentation.

applause awards
Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.
Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.
The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.
We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
