Bowers & Wilkins Announces PX7 Carbon Edition Headphones

It’s just a few months from the festive season, but it is looking a lot like the leading audio brands are preparing for a carbon Christmas.
Just last week, REL boxed it new Limited Edition Carbon Special subwoofer, and now, speaker specialist B&W is gift wrapping its latest addition to its carbon polymer PX7 headphone range.
Carbon has been a select part of audio since the proverbial year dot. Known for its twin attributes of strength and lightness, designers use this material for headshells and tonearms, cabinet enclosures and in speaker drivers. For proof, look to the number of Formula 1 cars endowed with carbon fibre parts.
B&W wisely saw carbon’s potential for headphones. Used as the material to reinforce both arms of a headset reduced overall weight whilst increasing the wearer’s comfort factor by a significant margin. There was also a side bonus for buyers: the PX7 models could withstand plenty of wear and tear.
The new PX7 Carbon Edition model takes the range to 3. Released a little time ago was the PX7 finished in Space Grey or Silver. The Carbon Limited Edition comes in a deep black finish and a swish contrasting diamond-cut logo and bezel edge on each earcup, equating nicely to its carbon fibre polymer construction.

Comfort level was high on the design criteria so you can expect a well-padded headband and earpads that feel nice and cosy on the ears whilst providing a commendable seal.
Elsewhere it’s a premium model all the way with wireless and noise-cancelling modes also high on the design agenda. The PX7’s noise-cancelling ability it’s not only effective but easy to access as well. Pressing a button on the left headcup allows any wearer to cycle through one of three modes – low, medium and high. Choose low in the office, medium whilst commuting and for dead silence, simply choose the PX7’s “high” noise-cancelling mode.
The PX series features Qualcomm’s aptX HD Bluetooth which uses a top rank codec to allow wireless transmissions of 24-bit hi-res audio streams. Gamers and smartphone users that buy the PX7 or PX5 models report the sound hits their earcups at warp speed and it has significantly fewer drop-outs.
If you’re wearing a PX7 when you’re out and about, you can count on having up to 30 hours of battery life, which is ample for most daily commutes. Recharging is via a USB-C port.
An over-the-ear design, the PX7 models carry 43mm drive units that are the largest B&W employs in any of its headphones, but the total weight of this model is a modest 310g.
The PX7 models are available now and sell for $399.99.

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.
Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.
The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.
We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality.
