Cleer Audio Crescent Smart Speaker Launched

Cleer Audio’s Crescent smart speaker promises to sound as good as it looks.
Cleer Audio may be a relative newcomer to the scene, but it appears that it has the likes of Bowers & Wilkins in its sights with the Crescent desktop speaker revealed at CES 2020.
Slipped within its sleek shape is a linear array of eight custom 40mm full-range drivers and a pair of 3.3-inch rear-firing subwoofers. The eye-catching design is formed by a curvaceous speaker grille wrapped around a reinforced speaker cabinet with glass fibre ribs for reduced vibrations and sonic resonance.
Naturally, the Cleer Audio Crescent supports Hi-Res Audio formats (AAC, FLAC, WMA and Apple Lossless) and stream from sources such as Spotify Connect, Apple AirPlay 2 and Chromecast. Wi-fi, 3.5mm Aux, and optical inputs cover connectivity options.
Additionally, it sports a voice-activated assistant and boasts an optimised mic array and noise-rejection for far-field voice recognition.
Owners can dial in their preferred EQ via the Cleer+ app which also offers several bespoke audio modes to choose from. For instance, Wide Stereo Mode produces an hi-fi-like soundscape; Room Filling Mode is the choice for parties as it disperses music throughout a room, while 3D Immersive Mode uses beamforming technology to channel sound to a single sweet spot, according to Cleer.
Price and availability
The Crescent Smart Speaker goes on sale in August 2020 and will cost $599.99 US / £599.99 (TBC).

applause awards
Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.
Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.
The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.
We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
