Denon Drops Next-Gen True Wireless Duo

Denon's AH-C500W and AH-C840NCW wireless earbuds promise superior comfort and performance and to go all day long.
Denon impressed us with its premium PerL Pro earbuds last year, but its new AH-C500W and AH-C840NCW earphones target the more cost-conscious listener on the go. However, Denon says its latest offerings still deliver "superior sound, innovative features, and exceptional comfort."
The more affordable newcomers, the AH-C500W (above), boast "high-performance sound" thanks to Bluetooth LE Audio. They feature FreeEdge 12mm drivers in an open design and so are more akin to the AirPods 3 than AirPods Pro 2, for example.
Being rated IPX4 water resistant means they'll shake off light rain and you working up a sweat. They'll also keep up with you stamina-wise thanks to a claimed 24-hour battery life when you factor in the charging case. Furthermore, a 10-minute quick charge translates to an extra hour of play time should you get caught short.
Twin microphones in each earbud promise "crystal-clear" voice calls, while Auracast audio-sharing tech allows you to connect the buds with a growing number of compatible sources and devices.
The WH-C840NCW, costing a little extra, features the same 12mm drivers and dual mic array as their non-identical twin siblings; however, the NC in the snappy name indicates the addition of noise-cancelling skills.
The AH-C840NCW's adaptive hybrid active noise cancelling features a passthrough transparency mode for greater awareness of your surroundings.
The AH-C840NCW beefs up the battery, too, with 35 hours of total listening time wrung from a single case charge. It can also go 0-60 minutes after a five-minute emergency boost.
Like the AH-C500W, the AH-C840NCW is loaded with Bluetooth LE Audio and Auracast capabilities for connecting with multiple compatible sources. They also sport IPX4-rated water resistance.
As the C840NCW are in-ear designs, they also come bundled with small, medium and large soft silicone eartips.
The Denon AH-C500W and AH-C840NCW are available in black or white finishes and are priced at £99/ €99 and £159/ €159, respectively.

applause awards
Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.
Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.
The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.
We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
