Eclipse TD307MK3 - Its First New Speaker in Seven Years
Eclipse's new compact TD307MKIII boasts a dozen key improvements.
Following the announcement of the flagship TD712zMK2's retirement, Eclipse has revealed the TD307MK3, its first new model in seven years.
Touted as "a compact full-range speaker for the modern music lover", the TD307MK3 replaces the TD307MK2. Apparently, it results from several years of research, development and refinement at Eclipse's factory in Kobe, Japan. Furthermore, we are told that the 2kg speaker boasts "the same technologies as Eclipse's upmarket models at a fraction of the price".
The 135 × 212 × 184mm (WxHxD) TD307MK3 employs a new high-performance 6.5 cm full-range fibreglass drive unit - marking the first time fibreglass has been used in the TD307 series - and benefits from twelve key improvements that promise to help deliver its full potential.
Eclipse says that the fibreglass cone is capable of greater speed, lower vibration, greater dynamics and a lower noise floor. Meanwhile, vibration has been reduced by a claimed 50% over its predecessor and Eclipse's engineers have, says the company, achieved an 80% increase in linearity.
The new but unmistakably Eclipse ovoid cabinet claims greater volume. This should be an improved environment for the new driver as it is said to move more air. The expanded internal dimensions also makes way for a larger 'repulsive' neodymium main and sub-magnet system that we're told provides greater power for the new driver. While being more efficient, this new magnet system also helps to deliver a wider frequency response, especially where bass is concerned. Eclipse quotes an impressive 80 Hz–25 kHz (-10db) frequency range with 80 dB/Wm sensitivity.
Additionally, an improved terminal arrangement accepts both bare wire and banana-terminated speaker cables, plus a new cable-routing design to accommodate larger cables while making things tidier looking.
Of course, the TD307MK3 is also fitted out with Eclipse's established proprietary technologies, including the diffusion stay (where the driver is internally mounted onto a vibration-eliminating five-pillar stay) and the mass anchor, which provides solid support for the cone's high-speed movements.
The TD307MK3 is also a versatile speaker system thanks to a clever integrated mounting bracket with angle adjustment to enable wall- or ceiling-mounting for a range of A/V applications, including custom installations. Furthermore, the integrated angle adjustment provides -25 to 30 degrees of movement when placed horizontally or 0 to 90 degrees when used on a wall or ceiling.
The Eclipse TD307MK3 is available now in black or white, priced at £300 each or £600 per pair.

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.
Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.
The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.
We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
