EPSON RELEASES FUN-SIZED PORTABLE LASER PROJECTOR

There's no denying the fun of having a few mates over to watch the grand final on the big screen, beverages in-hand and BBQ sizzling away in the background.

One of the biggest challenges facing such adventures, however, is getting a bright enough picture during the day.

While options abound online from manufacturers you've likely never heard of, it is a case of getting what you pay for. Many offerings are just not bright enough, even if the specs do claim ridiculous brightness levels.

This may all be set to change with the release of Epson's EF-100W and EF-100B portable projectors.

At 23cm long and 2.7kg, the EF-100 is not only portable but able to be placed and project in virtually any direction. Due to its laser light source and three-chip LCD design, the EF-100W is said to provide bright, vibrant images of up to 150" without the need to draw curtains.

Set up is also swift and straightforward thanks to the onscreen welcome guide. The EF-100 offers auto keystone adjust (V +/- 45°), which can be accessed with the welcome guide directly from the remote.

Content from smartphones, tablets, laptops, DVD players and game consoles can be accessed via the EF-100's HDMI input. Likewise, streaming devices such as Amazon's Fire TV and Google Chromecast are also supported with a rear-facing USB input.

The EF-100's internal speakers are rated at 5 watts, with dedicated sound modes for differing types of content. Bluetooth connectivity is also supported, allowing the projector to be connected to a soundbar (which would be our recommendation) or headphones via the headphone jack.

Both models, which are identical apart from the finish, offer a contrast ratio of  2,500,000:1 (dynamic contrast) and WXGA resolution. Available in either white (EF-100W) with silver accents, or black (EF-100B) with copper edging, both sport a leather-like finish and rounded corners.

The EF-100W and EF-100B are both available now from retailers or directly from http://www.epson.com.au/projectors for $1,699 RRP.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
