In the wake of its recent CanJam Dubai appearance, where it previewed a new generation of portable DACs, Fosi Audio has now turned its attention back to amplification, positioning the BT20A MAX as the most fully realised evolution of its long-running BT20A platform to date.

Rather than reinventing the concept, the BT20A MAX endeavours to refine it. The compact 2.1-channel amplifier is aimed squarely at desktop and small-room systems, but with considerably more headroom and system flexibility than earlier iterations in the range.

Central to the BT20A MAX is Texas Instruments’ TPA3255 Class-D amplifier chip, delivering up to 180 watts per channel into 4 ohms (300 watts peak). Fosi Audio pairs this with post-filter feedback (PFFB) topology, a design approach intended to maintain lower distortion and more consistent performance across varying speaker loads.

Looking internally, the layout separates digital and analogue power supplies, with ELNA capacitors specified in the signal path. While these component choices are familiar within the category, the emphasis here appears to be on incremental refinement rather than headline-grabbing specification.

System flexibility is where the BT20A MAX looks to differentiate itself from entry-level desktop amplifiers. In addition to dual RCA inputs and standard passive speaker outputs, the unit includes a dedicated subwoofer output and selectable 80 Hz high-pass filter. This allows the BT20A MAX to function as the heart of a compact 2.1 system, reducing low-frequency load on bookshelf speakers when paired with a subwoofer. Bass and treble controls are included, alongside an EQ bypass mode for users who prefer a purist signal path.

Wireless duties are handled by Qualcomm’s QCC3095 Bluetooth chipset, with support for Bluetooth 6.0 and a wide range of high-resolution codecs, including aptX, aptX HD, aptX Adaptive, aptX Lossless, and LDAC. In practical terms, this positions the BT20A MAX as equally comfortable in a cable-free desktop setup as it is in a more traditional wired system.

Usability has also come in for some attention. A motorised analogue volume potentiometer allows remote volume adjustment without resorting to digital attenuation, while a 12-volt trigger input supports basic system automation. Thermal management comes via an actively cooled chassis, with Fosi Audio claiming a newly engineered low-noise fan and revised ventilation improve cooling efficiency by around 30 per cent during extended listening sessions.

According to Fosi Audio founder and CEO Ryan Huang, the BT20A MAX represents the fullest expression of the BT20A concept to date, bringing together higher power, expanded connectivity, and greater tuning flexibility while retaining the compact form factor that made the original platform popular.

The Fosi Audio BT20A MAX is available now via Fosi Audio’s official website and authorised global retailers, priced at US$229.99.
