HED Technologies Unity Wi-Fi Headphones UK Show Debut

The Unity "Full-Fidelity" Wi-Fi headphones see their UK show debut at the North West Audio Show thanks to Electromod.

Wireless headphones are ubiquitous on the commute in towns and cities. Powered by some flavour of Bluetooth codec, hoping to squeeze as much information from the source as possible, the convenience of going cable-free has been made even more worthwhile as the likes of aptX HD and aptX Adaptive improve the experience.

However, there is another way. Well, so says Switzerland's HED Technologies as it unveils Unity, the first "Full-Fidelity" headphones capable of lossless streaming at resolutions up to 24 bits/96kHz.

The Unity headphones incorporate a dual-core 650 MHz 32-bit ARMv7 processor and a nine-axis head-tracking motion sensor for immersive listening. You also get 1 GB of RAM and 16GB of onboard storage. Additionally, Unity boasts a 12-microphone array supporting active noise cancellation and promises crystal-clear calling.

Moreover, Unity is the first wireless headset in the world that features the proprietary Full-Fidelity standard that's said to stream "true lossless audio" over 2.4GHz Wi-Fi made possible through the Unity Multisource Music Player companion app utilising your mobile device's onboard Wi-Fi functionality to transmit at 24bit/96kHz. Additionally, the app offers Qobuz, Spotify, and SoundCloud access. Alternatively, you can stream FLAC files from DLNA/UPnP-accessible storage. The app also includes an equaliser offering presets and the ability to create a custom response curve.

You can also connect Unity via Bluetooth 4.2 using SBC and AAC codecs or use the adapter for wired listening.

Precision milled from a single block of 6063 architectural-grade aluminium alloy and combined with a vibration-reducing, super rigid carbon fibre-infused nylon chassis, Unity's earcups are home to 40mm Titanium-coated drivers providing a claimed 20Hz-22kHz frequency response.

Unity's soft and durable headband is constructed from a strong yet flexible polyamide and works with height-adjustable ear cups to distribute weight evenly across your head. Finally, the memory foam ear pads with cooling gel wrapped in velvet-soft microfibre should result in comfortable listening sessions.

Battery stamina is rated at 6-8 hours and takes 90 minutes to reach full charge from empty. However, a quick six-minute squirt of go-juice translates to an hour of playback if you're in a hurry.

Playback control is by buttons on the headphone's outer shell, one of which can be programmed to provide quick access to the feature of your choice.

Priced at $2,199 US with three free months of Qobuz access, the Unity headphones are available to order now. If you want to see them for yourself, head to Electromod's stand in the Headphone Zone at this weekend's North West Audio Show. You will also find the new Topping EHA5 Electrostatic amplifier and Schiit Yggdrasil + More is Less DAC there. Elsewhere, they will demonstrate Dan Clark Audio's Corina Electrostatic Headphones, Schiit Urd transport and the new Vidar 2 amplifier.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
