KEF IS ON ‘Q’ WITH 2017 RANGE

Now in its eighth generation, KEF’s Q series of loudspeakers are available in Australia from August and they offer superb performance at affordable pricing.

At an exclusive held in Sydney this week, select members of the press were invited to a preview of the range, presented by Johan Coorg, KEF’s International Ambassador.

The Q Series has won countless accolades in the past for offering consumers "a highly sophisticated and accomplished sound performance for a ‘mid-price’ outlay", and Coorg tells us KEF are quite proud of this generation.

And while at first glance the range may closely resemble the previous generation, through extensive research and further development many improvements have been made across the board.

Many would argue it’s nearing perfection already, but the now legendary Uni-Q driver continues to be refined. We’ll spare you the technical details but vast improvements have been made to the tweeter loading tube, while the cone structure and suspension of the low frequency driver has also been further refined.

In the floor standing Q models, the UniQ driver is now isolated from the auxiliary bass radiators, in its own sealed enclosure. The crossovers are also said to be upgraded with new, lower distortion inductors.

The list of improvements goes on, but the new and improved finish in either Black or White across the range is both durable and stunning. They also come supplied with magnetically attached grills.

When KEF Founder, Raymond Cooke, received the Order of the British Empire (OBE) from Her Majesty the Queen in 1979 she asked:

This is for loudspeakers?

To which he replied,

High-fidelity loudspeakers, ma’am.

In six decades, KEF’s philosophy has not faltered, and Cookes legacy continues today. The brand’s continued pursuit of ‘true sound’ rings true when Coorg explains that from KEF’s smallest portable speaker, right through to their flagship MUON loudspeaker, the KEF sound or ‘voicing’ is consistent.

KEF Q Series 2017

The Q series range consists of three 2.5-Way floor standing speakers – Q950 ($2999 RRP), Q750 ($2499 RRP) and Q550 ($1899 RRP). There are also two book shelf speakers – Q350 ($1099 RRP) and Q150 ($899). Completing the range is a centre channel – Q650c ($1199 RRP).

In a brief but ample demonstration, the new Q range certainly impressed with accurate stage placement, a smooth frequency response and plenty of bottom end presence for either home theatre duty or casual listening to your favourite record.

There's no wonder Q series is KEF's best-selling range.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
