Klipsch Launches R-40PM & R-50PM Powered Speakers

Klipsch's R-40PM and R-50PM join the passive R-40M and R-50M in the US maker's recharged Reference speaker series, offering improved performance over the outgoing models and extensive connectivity, including a phono stage.

Klipsch's new powered speakers build on the outgoing R-41PM and R-51PM, with the R-40PM and R-50PM boasting improved skills in the bass department thanks to increased cabinet depths, as we're told they can reach down to 60Hz and 55Hz, respectively. Furthermore, a Dynamic Bass Equalizer "optimises bass performance in real-time, ensuring perfect bass regardless of the volume level."

Output is not too shabby either, with Klipsch stating the R-40 pushes out 70W of total system power, and the R-50 promises to pin your ears back with its 120W. Best of all, as these are powered speakers, neither require an additional external amplifier.

Just plug the master into a suitable power outlet and join the other speaker to it using the supplied cable, and you have your hi-fi system ready to just add sources.

Speaking of sources, the R-40PM and R-50PM offer various connectivity options, including USB and Optical for digital inputs and a 3.5mm Aux and stereo RCA which doubles up as a phono stage for all you vinylistas. Finally, there is Bluetooth for wireless streaming.

Being members of the Reference line, these new powered monitors feature premium drivers alongside the latest larger edge-to-edge proprietary Tractrix horn design that provides improved coverage, bandwidth, and directivity control. The R-40PM is loaded with a 100mm spun copper, thermoformed crystal polymer (TCP) woofer and a 25mm linear travel suspension (LTS) aluminium tweeter, while the R-50PM has a 130mm TCP woofer and the same 25mm LTS tweeter.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
