Mark Levinson Announces № 5105 Turntable

Mark Levinson shows no signs of slowing down with a steady release of new products over the past months. Marking the start of 2020 comes the announcement its new № 5105 vinyl spinner at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week.
The second-ever turntable from the company, it's been marked as a “premium precision-engineered turntable with a completely original custom design”, the № 5105 is said to blend “lustrous elements intrinsic to the acclaimed 5000 series industrial design”.
The latest design features one-inch thick, bead-blasted, black-anodized, solid aluminium front panels that are machined and contoured to flow seamlessly into the sleek glass display. The tinted glass is recessed into a bead-blasted, clear-anodized aluminium bezel, which houses the aluminium Speed and Standby control buttons.
Jim Garrett, Senior Director, Product Strategy and Planning, HARMAN Luxury Audio, told StereoNET:
The quality of the № 5105 must be heard to be appreciated, and we're very proud to be able to introduce legendary Mark Levinson quality to a broader set of recorded music enthusiasts.
The iconic Mark Levinson hourglass knob design is also featured as a record weight; bead-blasted machined aluminium with a gently curved profile mass loaded with solid brass. This silhouette is echoed in the custom aluminium tonearm gimbal.
A custom 10-inch high-gloss back carbon-fibre tonearm tube is fused to a solid aluminium headshell with an integrated finger lift. The nearly 2-inch thick solid aluminium platter is suspended on a ground, hardened steel axle rotates on ultra-precise bearings. An oil-free bearing bottom made of a mix of composite material with integrated lubrication and a maintenance-free sintered brass bushing that the company says “ensures reliable operation for years to come.”
Addressing speed control and drive, Mark Levinson has implemented a12V synchronous motor with a control signal is digitally generated. The company says “it exhibits no temperature drift, ensuring speed stability and low wow/flutter.”
The signature platter mat and user guide are delivered stylishly in the Nº5105 12-inch double LP gatefold jacket.
The № 5105 turntable will be available either with or without a factory-installed moving coil phono cartridge. Local pricing has not yet been established, but overseas it will sell for $6,000 US without phono cartridge, or $7,000 US with a cartridge.
Interested analogue lovers are going to have to show a little patience though, as the № 5105 turntable is not expected until around the end of the year.

applause awards
Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.
Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.
The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.
We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
