Mark Levinson Introduces No 5101 Streaming Sacd Player

Mark Levinson introduced its new No 5101 Network Streaming, Super Audio CD (SACD) player and Digital to Analog Converter (DAC) at last week's High End Show in Munich.

Sporting a bold, new and updated design for the brand, its also equipped with a PrecisionLink II DAC, with the No 5101 looking to plug the current gap of high-end SACD players while delivering streaming smarts.

With a wide range of supported digital audio sources and formats, the No 5101 allows playback of physical media including SACD, CD-A, CD-R and CD-RW. It supports FLAC, WAV, AIFF, OGG, MP3, AAC and WMA formats.

The No 5101can stream from NAS drives as well and DLNA and UPnP devices connected to the same network as the No 5101 via Ethernet or Wi-Fi. It can also navigate and playback audio files from a USB flash drive connected to the USB type-A input.

Additionally, with one coaxial and one optical S/PDIF digital input, the No 5101 serves as a premium stand-alone DAC. The latest generation ESS PRO Sabre 32-bit D/A converter with jitter elimination circuitry and a fully balanced, discrete current-to-voltage converter directly descended from the No 5802 and No 5805 integrated amps form the heart of the digital audio processing stage.

In addition to the digital inputs, it has one coaxial and one optical S/PDIF digital output which will pass a PCM stereo signal through to other devices such as integrated amplifiers.

A toroidal transformer mated to 13,600uF of filter capacitance forms the heart of the linear power supply which powers the DAC and all analogue circuitry. Individual regulators for each channel assure dual monaural operation.

The power supply, transformer and control PCBA's are encased in a steel cage shield isolated from the digital and analogue audio signal path.

The robust slot-loading transport is suspended on steel standoffs floating on a PVC and styrene-butadiene rubber sandwich and shielded with a steel cover.

The No 5101's one-inch-thick solid aluminium front panels are bead blasted, black anodised, and machine contoured to flow seamlessly into the sleek glass display, which itself is recessed into a bead-blasted and clear-anodised aluminium bezel.

It is expected to start shipping Q4 2019 and will sell for $5,500.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
