Mcintosh Releases The Rs200 Wireless Loudspeaker System

It’s a wireless loudspeaker system like no other! Incomparable is probably the best way to describe McIntosh’s foray into the Wireless Loudspeaker genre with its monolithic RS200 model.

Featuring just about everything required for wireless music streaming and then some, you could say rivals look at the RS200 with open-mouthed envy.

Here’s why: while many wireless speakers carry an amp rated at a few handfuls of watts, the RS200 packs 650 watts of total power to its built-in eight drivers.

This octet comprises a pair of 4-inch and 6-inch woofers, four 2-inch midranges and two ¾-inch tweeters.

To provide your music with more grunt when required, a powered subwoofer connects to the RS200 via a built-in output.

And to ensure the RS200 integrates with any number of locations, McIntosh has included a 3-position Equalisation switch that allows its EQ to be tuned to a specific room and of course, a user’s personal listening preferences.

As for streaming options, there are plenty. These include Apple Airplay 2, Bluetooth 5.0 with support for AAC, Qualcomm aptX HD for hi-res playback and Qualcomm aptX Low Latency for improved audio transmission speed to ensure perfect syncing of sound with visual media.

You also get DTS Play-Fi whole-home audio and DNLA support.

For occasions when you prefer traditional “wired” to wireless connectivity, the RS200 has an audio-only HDMI input to connect to TVs that have an Audio Return Channel (ARC). There’s also an optical input for TVs without an ARC and plenty of other digital sources.

Other connections include a Type-B USB input for linking to a Mac or Windows PC, and a 3.5mm AUX input.

The RS200’s audio can be expanded by adding a pair of McIntosh Play-Fi compatible RS100 wireless speakers to provide home cinema sound.

The RS200 will arrive in March and will sell for US$3000 in the USA.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
