MITCHELL & JOHNSON FLAGSHIP 800 SERIES BUILT IN BRITAIN

Mitchell & Johnson has launched its flagship 800 Series, a range entirely designed, engineered and hand-built in Britain. The new 800 Series is the first Mitchell & Johnson range to be wholly made in the UK as the company proclaims "production comes home".

The new 800 Series represents a significant milestone for Mitchell & Johnson, after their considerable investment in the UK, they move towards an era of entirely British built equipment.

Mitchell & Johnson's commitment to UK production for the new 800 Series enables the company to produce higher quality products and have better control over all elements of the business; from design to final hand-assembly, customer service to technical support. Furthermore, customers will benefit from dedicated UK factory back-up.

The first products to be announced in the new 800 Series are the S800 ‘digital' preamp with multi-input DAC and phono stage, plus the matching S815 power amp, both priced at £1,299 each. Additionally, a matching CD player is following in November.

The S800 is Mitchell & Johnson's flagship preamp and has been designed to cater for both the vinyl renaissance as well as digital music-listening. The S800 benefits from a high-quality internal phono stage, compatible with both Moving Magnet and Moving Coil cartridges, plus a highly flexible built-in ESS Sabre 9018 DAC with an XMOS asynchronous USB input. The unit also boasts three optical and three coaxial digital ins.

On the analogue side of things, inputs include five unbalanced RCAs plus one balanced XLR. Outputs come by way of two unbalanced RCA plus one balanced XLR. Left and right dedicated subwoofer outputs bring additional flexibility with A/V systems and provide useful convenience for 2.1 audio set-ups. Further connections include a pair of fixed-level record outputs.

Finally, there is a dedicated high-quality internal headphone amplifier with a fascia-mounted 6.35mm/quarter-inch headphone jack. Further features include a Burr-Brown analogue volume control and a 12-volt power link.

Everything is housed within the new 800 Series casework featuring a solid aluminium machined front panel with custom-machined aluminium dials controlling volume attenuation and source selection. The front panel also includes an on/off toggle switch, standby mode indicator and IR sensor. The extra-large LCD panel provides source selection and volume information. You also get a remote control bundled into the deal.

Mitchell & Johnson's flagship S815 power amp perfectly complements the S800 preamp, sharing the same new 800 Series casework with a solid aluminium machined front panel, on/off toggle switch and standby mode indicator. However, central to the new S815 power amp's striking design, there is a pair of illuminated VU meters.

The unit's Class A/B architecture offers 150 watts RMS (into 8 ohms) and 300 watts RMS into a 4-ohm load. Additionally, it has been designed using six Toshiba high-power audio-grade output transistors per channel.

The S815 power amp is equipped with both RCA and XLR inputs, and also benefits from RCA stereo line outputs for easy bi-amping. Dual gold-plated loudspeaker terminals offer bi-wiring. Also, a 12-volt power link provides simultaneous start-up when used in conjunction with the S800 preamp.

The new S800 preamp and S815 power amp are available now to order from Mitchell & Johnson dealers priced at just £1,299 each available in brushed silver and brushed black.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
