Monitor Audio Studio 89 Standmount Speakers Launched
The new Studio 89 speakers from Monitor Audio leverage Hyphn's Transparent Design Philosophy.
Monitor Audio's Studio 89 has been named after the British brand's famed Studio model, the Studio 15. Introduced in 1989 as a two-way standmounter, the Studio 15 combined a glossy black finish with gold-anodised drivers, which is now proudly worn by the Studio 89.
The high-gloss black cabinet and gold driver not only pay homage to the 80s speaker's aesthetic but also separate the Studio 89 from the rest of Monitor Audio's offerings, as this finish option stands alone for the new model.
However, does it sound as good as it looks? If you want, you can skip to our review of Studio 89 and find out now.
The Studio 89 is actually smaller than the Studio 15. It features the company's latest MPD (Micro-Pleated Diaphragm) tweeter, topped and tailed by two of Monitor Audio's RDT (Rigid-Diaphragm Technology) mid/bass drivers. The cones comprise three ultra-thin layers—a C-CAM (ceramic-coated aluminium magnesium) outer skin sitting over a Nomex honeycomb central core and an underside skin of woven carbon fibre. Monitor Audio says this makeup is ideally lightweight and strong.
Monitor Audio says the crossovers have undergone "hours of listening and part selection" by its engineering team to make the most of this driver complement. Meanwhile, the rigidly structured cabinet features an 18mm thick front baffle and 15mm side walls with a pair of slot ports to the rear panel. The drivers also benefit from through-bolt bracing to optimise performance.
The Studio 89 are available now priced at $2,500 USD per pair and Monitor Audio offers optional speaker stands at $625 USD.

applause awards
Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.
Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.
The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.
We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
