Monitor Audio’s Climate Series 3G Promises Excellent Sound, No Matter The Weather
Monitor Audio's new Climate Series 3G speakers have you covered in the pool, garden or gym.
Monitor Audio boasts that its new weatherproofed speakers are designed to work just as well indoors as out. The Climate Series 3G models can handle life in the elements whilst "capable of delivering indoor sound outdoors" and promising "exemplary acoustic performance."
The latest series comprises two models: Climate Medium (CL2 M) and Climate Small (CL2 S). While their immediately obvious environment would be your garden, Monitor Audio points out that their rugged design makes them equally suitable for retail spaces, restaurants, and gyms, as well as swimming pools and "homes with high levels of humidity," which may be of interest to those of you with property in Equatorial Guinea, Columbia, Brunei, and Bangladesh, for instance.
The range features Monitor Audio's C-CAM black dome tweeter. Monitor Audio's metal domed tweeter debuted in 1982 and has, naturally, been refined over the years. This latest incarnation, an enhanced gold C-CAM dome coated in a deep black finish, promises to deliver "clarity, realism, and detail."
Meanwhile, the comparatively new (a mere two decades in development) Rigid Surface Technology II (RST II) drive unit offers a pistonic motion resulting in "total realism and clarity" alongside a "lifelike sound," so says the manufacturer.
Both models sport a large, sealed Auxiliary Bass Radiator (ABR) at the rear, functioning like a sealed port tube. This design not only prevents ingress from the elements but also allows for satisfyingly deep bass. Finally, the crossover uses high-quality conductors and capacitors to deliver the purest signal to each drive unit.
The larger model packs a 165mm (6-inch) RST II bass-mid driver, while the smaller model is loaded with a 100mm (4-inch) RST II bass-mid driver. Partnered with those, both are equipped with a 25mm (1-inch) black C-CAM dome tweeter.
This is all wrapped in a sealed cabinet enclosure made from dense ABS and reinforced with glass fibre. Its impressive IP66 rating shows that the Climate 3G speakers are dust-tight and impervious to powerful water jets—or a UK summer.
Installation and positioning should be trouble-free, thanks to the die-cast aluminium 'Quik-Link' bracket, which allows the speakers to move 180 degrees in both vertical and horizontal planes.
Available in matte black and matte white from September (in the UK & Europe), the Monitor Audio Climate Medium (CL2 M) costs £750/ €850 per pair, while the Climate Small (CL2 S) costs £600/ €700 a pair.
Local pricing and availability has not yet been confirmed.

applause awards
Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.
Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.
The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.
We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
