Philips Announces Sub-£1000 55-Inch OLED TV
Philips' new Ambilight OLED705 TV costs less than £1000 and boasts support for all the major HDR formats.
When Philips announced its 2021 TV range, it seemed to miss out this veritable bargain. The OLED705 costs £979 for the 55-inch model, whereas the 65-inch versions will set you back a not unreasonable £1,499.
While the pricing might be low, the OLED705's spec sheet is long. Reading down the list, we can tick off support for Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG, as well as Dolby Atmos audio. You also get DTS Play-Fi multi-room audio support thrown in too.
Philips' OLED705 is powered by Android TV and features Google Assistant built-in alongside support for Amazon Alexa. Naturally, there's also a raft of supported streaming services onboard, such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, BBC iPlayer, YouTube and Spotify.
The snazzy near frameless design manages to pack in the same 50W 2.1 sound system as used in the brand's OLED805 from last year. Additionally, there's three-sided Ambilight which is always a neat talking point but not as impressive as the four-sided variety shown off earlier this year.
The OLED705 sports a Game Mode and support for 4K@120Hz; however, oddly, none of the four HDMI sockets seem to support eARC. Also, as part of the cost-saving exercise, the company's P5 AI Perfect Picture Engine, the AI-powered picture quality optimisation tech, has been benched.
If you fancy a fully-loaded (and more expensive) version, hold fire, as it sounds like there will be an OLED706 on its way soonish.
