PINE Beat Promises Portable Sound Without the Waste

British company POCA Audio has introduced the PINE Beat, a new portable Bluetooth speaker designed with sustainability and longevity in mind.

The IP67-rated device combines a compact speaker and power bank, with user-replaceable batteries and modular accessories to extend its usable life and reduce environmental impact.

According to POCA Audio, PINE Beat is constructed using various recycled and sustainable materials, including aluminium, natural rubber, recycled silicone, organic cotton, and ocean-recovered plastics. The company says the speaker is also serviceable and upgradeable, with provisions to replace or update components such as the battery and Bluetooth circuit board as needed.

From a technical standpoint, the PINE Beat features a custom 2.5-inch driver with a neodymium magnet, designed to deliver accurate mids and deep bass. It also includes a dedicated tweeter for clear high-frequency reproduction and a passive bass radiator to reinforce low-end performance. The swappable battery system offers up to 30 hours of playback on a single charge, with a 2.5-hour recharge time. The battery can be switched out in moments, and the speaker maintains its full waterproof seal during this process. It also functions as a power bank, allowing users to charge mobile devices on the go.

POCA highlights that consumer electronics waste remains a major environmental concern, citing figures suggesting that over 500 million devices were sent to landfill in the UK alone last year. The PINE Beat addresses this issue by avoiding sealed, non-repairable construction in favour of user-accessible internals and modular design. A commendable 30-month warranty is included, and POCA offers end-of-life recycling with return shipping covered within the UK.

Accessories for the PINE Beat are also manufactured with sustainability in mind. The magnetic “Mag Base,” recycled-plastic “Cord,” and traceable ocean-plastic “Peg Stake” are all made in the UK and are designed to offer flexible mounting options for a variety of environments, from outdoor activities to home use.

Several larger audio and AV brands have also taken steps to reduce their environmental footprint in recent years. For example, Bang & Olufsen’s Beosound Level is Cradle to Cradle certified and features a modular, repairable construction. Sony's LinkBuds S incorporate recycled plastics, while Yamaha’s long-term sustainability plan focuses on renewable materials and energy efficiency.

POCA Audio’s PINE Beat speaker is priced at £170 and available directly via the company’s website.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
