Primare NP5 Prisma Mk2 Announced

Primare announces an upcoming update to its NP5 Prisma network player.

Primare's NP5 Prisma MK2 is, as one would expect, a revised version of the Swedish hi-fi company's popular NP5 Prisma network player.

We are told that the development of the new model was somewhat jump-started by the devastating fire at the AKM chip factory. This event understandably caused long-term disruption of the supply of the critical re-clocking chip at the heart of the NP5 Prisma design that allowed for the selection of output sampling frequencies.

Primare had to make changes in order to continue making what has proved to be one of the company's most popular models. The result is that Primare has sourced a readily available chip and redesigned the circuit to maintain the performance of the original NP5 Prisma while allowing for MQA passthrough not possible with the original chip.

Primare states that the NP5 Mk2 will play nice with virtually any PCM file frequencies up to 24/192kHz (16/44.1 kHz, 24/48, 88.2, 96, 176.4 and 192 kHz) over USB-A, Wi-Fi or LAN, with DSD files being converted to PCM at the selected fixed or native playback output resolutions and output connection by Toslink optical or RCA coaxial. Naturally, Bluetooth is also available.

All features and functionality remain the same, with Spotify HiFi and Tidal Connect expected this summer to join AirPlay 2, Chromecast built-in, and Roon Ready skills.

The Primare NP5 Mk2 is available from August with an RRP of £550.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
