Reed Extends Its Arms to Australia

Known for their exquisite, hand-crafted, high-precision tonearms and turntables, audio manufacturer Reed has just landed in Australia, and is set to be distributed by Absolute Hi End. The range of Reed’s tonearms that will be available in Australia include the Reed 2A, Reed 3P and Reed 3Q.

Reed 2A (available now for $3,990 RRP plus options)

The Reed 2A 12” tonearm and is ideal for people who have a fixed audio setup and demand perfect sound. With a rigid and stable construction, the Reed 2A is the perfect market entry product by Reed, and promises the same sound quality as Reed 3Q model, albeit with fewer possibilities for adjustment.

Consisting of two parts, the Reed 2A has a massive stand and moving part, made of solid metal. It has a height (VTA) adjustment of 20 mm, with a fine tolerance of ±0.1 mm. After adjusting the tonearm height, it is then tightened to a stand. With ruby olive bombe bearings, the Reed 2A will keep mechanism friction to an absolute minimum, and has a down force range from 10 mN to 30 mN.

Reed 3P (available now for $5,750 RRP plus options)

The Reed 3P embodies an award winning design, being another of Reed’s products to land a prestigious Red Dot product award.

Replacing the 2P model, the model 3P is Reed’s latest tonearm. Packed full of features, the Reed 3P includes fine VTA adjustment on the fly; it also has the unique possibility of adjusting azimuth while playing a record. In a unique twist, during the adjustment process the cartridge "swings" around the needle tip, keeping all other tonearm parameters intact. Combined with its magnetic antiskating, you are sure to enjoy your listening experience without balance distortion.

Part of Reed’s innovation behind the 3P is its bearing system. Although the tonearm bearing system can be considered as gimbal style, it acts like unipivot setup. The major difference from unipivot systems are that instead of a single pivot, three pivots and both vertical and horizontal axis magnetic stabilisers are used to give ultimate control.

Reed 3Q (available now for $6,190 RRP plus options)

For a precision listening experience equipped with the latest technology, the Reed 3Q is furnished with a laser that allows adjustment of VTA and azimuth with unparalleled speed and precision (VTA precision +/- 0.1 mm, azimuth precision +/- 0.25 deg).

The Reed 3Q is mounted on a solid steel flange, in which the actual arm shaft is hidden. A wide range of height adjustment is possible, and in addition, there is a sensitive VTA adjuster that can also be used during playback. Even azimuth is adjustable, but not in the usual way: the headshell is equipped with a specially designed tilting mechanism, adjustable with a screw.

Statically balanced, the Reed 3Q tonearm has been designed to minimise any swinging effect, with its counterweight being at the same horizontal level as the needle tip and utilising a downforce range from 10 mN to 30 mN.

Reed Muse 3C (coming soon)

Continuing on a trail of award-winning designs, the new Reed Muse 3C turntable recently won over a 38-member jury – after the expert panel assessed a staggering 4,928 entries from 56 countries – leaving the Muse 3C to take out the title in the internationally-acclaimed Red Dot Award: Product Design 2015.

The Reed Muse 3C, which will be available in Australia later this year, is a unique turntable that can be converted from friction drive to belt drive in minutes. The Muse 3C’s turntable disc velocity is stabilised by a quartz-based phase locked loop (PLL) system, and features electronic leveling (dedicated to measure turntable slope/tilt angle) that allows you to achieve perfect horizontal alignment without using additional tools.

Powered by two direct current motors, the Muse 3C is friction-driven by design. However, the major innovation in this model is its ability to convert to a belt-driven system in minutes by simply switching out the traction rollers and putting on a belt (and, of course, setting a switch to a correct position).

To prevent possible mechanical vibration, Reed use traction rollers (be it friction or belt) of different diameters, spinning at different velocities and having mathematically non-multiple diameters to the driving disc diameter. Disc velocity is stabilized by a quartz-based phase locked loop (PLL) system, so average speed deviation depends solely on the parameters of the quartz crystal. The Reed Muse 3C turntable drive comes equipped with both mechanical and electronic protection systems that will ensure a long life of high performance and musical enjoyment.

Reed is distributed in Australia by Absolute Hi End.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
