Rega Green Grade - Wonky Audio Fruit

Rega's Green Grade initiative recycles and reworks parts meaning you can save £100 on a Planar 1.
Rega's Green Grade turntables save you money, saves on landfill and, most importantly, does not compromise performance.
Rega is always looking at ways to reduce waste and avoid parts going to waste and, furthermore, we're told, has a team dedicated purely to reworking or recycling damaged parts.
However, some parts have cosmetic issues which could never be used or accepted in an 'A' grade product. In some cases, reworking them is not always economical, and such items are sadly destined for landfill. Even though Rega sees that as a last resort, they wanted to do more as a company.
WAF - WONKY AUDIO FRUIT
Thankfully, attitudes to waste are changing. For example, where for many years, imperfect fruit and vegetables were discarded and deemed not fit for sale simply due to appearance, now the popularity of such goods rebranded in the UK as "wonky fruit" has seen a vast increase in sales over recent years as consumers become more educated and aware of how important avoiding unnecessary waste is.
Rega now works with 650 suppliers (85% of which are based in the UK), and all are responsible for supplying the company with quality parts. However, some items may become damaged due to poor packing or mishandling during their journey. Rega's rework team often classed these parts as unrecoverable until now.
REGA GREEN GRADE DECKS
Rega Green Grade Products will function and perform flawlessly and come with Rega's Limited Lifetime Warranty against manufacturing defects. Rega reiterates that the only compromise is appearance, never performance. So when listening to your music on a Rega Green Grade product, you can be safe knowing you are helping our planet.
The first initiative will be the Planar 1 ECO DECK, where Rega has a selection of Planar 1 and Planar 1 Plus plinths that are marked, scratched or obsolete (gloss P1 and P1 Plus, for example). Additionally, the manufacturer has some marked or scratched P2 and P3 high gloss acrylic plinths that will also be built as Planar 1, fitting the appropriate brass bearing at no extra cost for those using P3 plinths.
These will be matched with other green Grade components, such as platters and tonearms with cosmetic faults and then be fitted with 'A' grade Carbon cartridges.
The Plinths for the ECO DECKS will NOT be silk screened with a P1 logo so they can be easily identified as Green Grade. However, each ECO deck will display a Rega ECO lid badge.
Every deck will be thoroughly tested and must pass all the stringent tests that an 'A' grade Planar 1 would need to pass. Naturally, the Lifetime Warranty is included against functional defects but will not cover cosmetics.
The upshot is that a Green Grade Planar 1 will be just £199 against the regular price of £299, and a Green Grade Planar 1 PLUS will be just £229 instead of the usual £385 UK SSP.
These are available to order globally now, with the first units being built and shipped in June 2023.

applause awards
Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.
Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.
The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.
We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
