Rega Nd3 Cartridge Features Neodymium Moving Magnet Tech

The Rega Nd3 is pitched as "the first of an innovative new range of handmade moving magnet cartridges" from the brand.
Following the early prototype of the Nd7 at the Bristol show in February, Rega has released its smaller sibling, the Nd3.
The new moving magnet phono cartridge replaces the Elys 2. The Nd3 takes its name from the rare earth element Nd (Neodymium), so it is no surprise that it features a Neodymium N55 magnet. Furthermore, we are told that it has the bragging rights to being the first moving magnet cart to do so.
Apparently, the Neodymium N55 is the world's most powerful commercially available magnet, which makes it a crucial component in making this unique design possible by providing more power than standard bar magnet designs.
Rega states that this all-new construction has been developed over the last decade and promises to deliver "next-level performance" from moving magnet technology.
According to the brand, each Nd3 is meticulously handmade and uses a brand-new generator geometry with perfect symmetry to achieve highly accurate channel balance. It also has an optimised pole gap for superior linearity and crosstalk characteristics.
This new cartridge is created with miniaturised parallel coils, wound in-house, utilising 38-micron wire with just 1275 turns. This, we are told, produces a low inductance, low impedance generator that gives a vastly improved high-frequency response.
The Nd3 is available now, priced at £175 and will soon be available to order factory fitted on both Planar 2 (£599) and Planar 3 turntables.

applause awards
Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.
Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.
The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.
We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
