REGA PLANAR 10, APHETA 3 AND P10 PSU ANNOUNCED

Rega has announced the new Planar 10 along with the Apheta 3 cartridge and new external PSU.

It doesn't feel almost a year since we announced the Planar 8. But, like that high-performance turntable, the Planar 10 takes inspiration from Rega's extremely limited edition Naiad (£30k).

The Regar Planar 10 gets even closer the to the top-flight Rega thanks to a raft of advanced components over its sibling.

Check out our Rega P10 Review

Firstly, the new RB3000 tonearm is fitted with an improved, low mass, precision bias housing. Additionally, it utilises Rega's preloaded zero tolerance bearing assembly adjusted to less than 1000th of a millimetre.

Then there's the ceramic top brace between the tonearm and central bearing. This addition is a first for a Rega production deck, and further improves rigidity as well as improving accuracy.

As with the Planar 8, the P10 uses a sandwich construction for the plinth. The Tancast 8 polyurethane foam core sits between two layers of high-pressure laminate. This construction makes the Planar 10's skeletal plinth 30% lighter than the original RP10.

Finally, the coupling of the ceramic flywheel-effect platter to the sub-platter has been improved, too.

Rega is taking no chances in the power train either. To ensure there is improved stability and accuracy, the P10's new motor mounting technique has been nabbed from the Naiad.

The Rega P10's 24v motor is mounted from the bottom and is designed to remove all stress from the motor body while holding the drive pulley still.

Furthermore, each motor is hand-tuned to match its own P10 electronic power supply. Of course, Rega says it's their most advanced.

The motor is connected to the deck via an EBLT, a drive belt featuring a new, bespoke new rubber compound.

The new PSU sports a metal case that matches the design of the company's other hi-fi components.

Apheta 3

If you recall, the Apheta 2 cartridge was the recommended fitment for the Planar 8. Well, it stands to reason that the P10 gets the next Apheta up the ladder.

The Apheta 3 moving coil cartridge was developed alongside the Planar 10 using Rega's most advanced "Fine Line" diamond profile.

You get the option to buy it separately for £1250 or packaged with the Planar 10 for £4499.

Of course, should you want the turntable without the cart, you can for £3599.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
