Rega Planar 3 RS Edition Turntable Borrows High-End Plinth Tech
The Rega Planar 3 RS Edition (Rega Special) is constructed using a brand-new aluminium metal skin HPL laminate to create the stiffest plinth Rega has ever offered at this level.
Rega's P3 RS features a stunning dark brushed metallic HPL plinth edged in high-gloss black. It includes a custom-matched Neo MK2 PSU with each motor vibration circuit hand-tuned to each individual motor.
Rega has pioneered the use of lightweight, ultra-rigid plinths for many years. Its use of a lightweight particulate core with a highly rigid phenolic resin skin has become the foundation of the original Planar range.
The new Planar 3 RS Edition takes this design philosophy to the next level using a High-Pressure Laminate (HPL) usually reserved for the Planar 6, Planar 8 and Planar 10 models for increased rigidity.
This complex plinth design prevents energy absorption and unwanted resonance, which will add unnatural distortions to the music. Equally, heavier mass can transfer more unwanted energy, such as motor or bearing noise, directly into the rotating record. Braces allow double-thickness phenolic resin in these critical areas, directly addressing mass absorption and unwanted energy transmission.
In addition, this premium HPL has a brushed metal dark aluminium skin and features an attractive satin finish. Rega's double brace system can also be found where increased rigidity is required (between the tonearm mounting and the main hub bearing), forming a structurally sound "stressed beam" assembly.
The RP3 RS also offers an RB330 precision tonearm factory fitted with an Nd5 MM cartridge.
Also included is a Neo turntable PSU MK2 (speed control + anti-vibration circuit) powering the 24 V low-noise, low-vibration motor, hand-tuned to the custom Neo PSU Mk2. Meanwhile, the CNC machined custom pulley spins the Reference EBLT drive belt and drives the Rega Planar 3 RS's sub-platter.
A 12 mm float glass opti-white polished platter and a smoked-finish dust cover round things off.
The Rega Planar 3 RS is available for pre-order now, priced at $1,795 USD. Shipping will begin in January 2025.

applause awards
Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.
Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.
The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.
We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
