Samsung’s Freestyle Portable Projector Can Plug Into Your Light Socket
Samsung's Freestyle portable projector can also replace your lightbulb for music-synced mood-lighting.
Shows such as CES 2022 are usually a hotbed of innovation, and it's great to see Samsung's more playful side with the barrel-shaped Freestyle 830g ultra-portable projector.
The white projector (other colours could follow) sits in a cradle that allows for 180 degrees of rotation with auto-levelling, auto-keystone and auto-focus capabilities. For instance, this could open up opportunities to project movies or even a starfield on your ceiling with the projector sitting on your bedside table.
While not challenging more serious projectors, the Samsung Freestyle still manages 1080p resolution, HDR support, and quoted 550 lumens while slinging an image of between 30 to 100-inches. In addition, it features a 360-degree five-watt in-built speaker and a far-field mic array for Amazon Alexa or Bixby voice assistants. Control comes by way of the bundled remote or Samsung Smart things app.
On the subject of apps, the Freestyle runs Sammy's Tizen 6.5 OS, which brings with it Netflix, Disney Plus, and Prime Video and more over Wi-Fi, as per the company's smart TVs. You also get a micro HDMI port for external connectivity, and content can also be mirrored from Android and iOS mobile devices thanks to its Bluetooth chops.
While Samsung is apparently working on an external battery pack, the projector is compatible with external batteries that support USB-PD and 50W/20V. However, you can apparently plug the Freestyle into an E26 lightbulb socket via an optional base adapter. This opens up the option of suspending it from the ceiling for discotastic floor projections.
Finally, included with the Freestyle projector is a diffusing lens cover designed to be used when the unit is in 'ambient' mode and promises to cast mood-enhancing light effects synced with your music.
