SONARWORKS APP IMPROVES HEADPHONE SOUND

We know it’s a bit early to talk about sleighs and reindeer, but snowy Latvia has come calling with an inexpensive improvement for Headphones.

This sonic tweak comes courtesy of Sonarworks, and it’s an enhancement of the brand’s app called True-Fi.

For an outlay of €79 you can install this app on a Mac OS or Windows device and have a 'virtual soundcard’ to use as software that processes an audio output signal to 24 bit/96kHz.

Choosing the True-Fi app from a drop-down menu and you get access to a way of ensuring your headphone’s sound conforms to what Sonarworks says is a ‘flat studio reference curve’.

The app is said to improve your headphone’s frequency response and by using filters, corrects for any humps or dips to provide an even response.

True-Fi can also be used to personalise your headphone’s sound to compensate for aging hearing by boosting bass and treble frequencies.

Sonarworks has measured a huge number of models from an equally large number of brands and has now expanded the apps compatibility with 27 new headphone profiles.

It now supports 157 models including Bose QuietComfort 35 II and Sony’s WH1000XM2.

Sonarworks says the uptake of the app has been huge. In fact, over 20,000 professional recording studios are reported to be using it.

While it sounds like a good thing, the True-Fi app can’t compensate for badly designed headphones. The model may have a flat frequency response, but the crappy sound is down to a cruddy design or cheap materials.

As the old saying goes, "you can’t make a silk headphone carry pouch from a sow’s bladder".

Plenty of headphones ranging from the bottom feeders and stretching to high-end models with eye-watering price tags have a faultless frequency response but still sound like two alley cats mauling each other in a trash can.

Conversely, other models measure poorly but sound sublime.

Of the brands supported by the True-Fi app, some have a larger presence than others. Brands that feature heavily are Beyerdynamic, Audio-Technica, Shure, Sony and Sennheiser.

Helmut Bems, CEO and co-founder of Sonarworks says the future is bright for his app, telling StereoNET:

We are proud to support an increasing number of headphones, and at no incremental cost to the consumer. We are also pleased that we now cover the entire Focal professional range, with the addition of the much requested Clear Professional and Listen Professional models.

Sonarworks offers a 10-day free trial, after which time you can purchase the software for €79.00.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
