While Sony has yet to make an official announcement, a recent FCC filing, suggests that the next-gen WH-1000X model could be on the horizon—potentially launching ahead of a requested short-term confidentiality deadline of July 22, 2025.

Some have considered Sony’s WH-1000XM5 the gold standard for premium noise-cancelling headphones since its release in 2022, so expectations for the XM6 are sky-high. While details remain scarce, the FCC listing—featuring a new model number (YY2984), an evolution from the XM5’s YY2954—offers intriguing clues about what’s coming.

One of the most significant possible changes could be a redesigned earcup and hinge, with detachable earpads debuting in the series. A diagram from the filing shows an earcup lifting off, exposing a user-accessible label underneath—suggesting Sony might be moving toward a more modular design, perhaps making replacing earpads easier and improving long-term durability. However, it remains unclear how the earcups will be attached via clips, magnets, or another mechanism. If true, this would significantly shift from the non-removable pads found in the WH-1000XM5.

Connectivity and wireless performance may also improve, as the XM6 is set to feature Bluetooth 5.3. This isn’t the very latest Bluetooth standard, but it’s new enough to support LE Audio and other advanced codecs. The FCC filing also notes a shift from the chip antenna used in the XM5 to an "Inverted-F Antenna," which could mean a stronger, more stable connection—this is pure speculation, mind you!
Power specs remain similar to the previous generation, with fast charging supported via 5V and 9V ratings. While the battery capacity isn’t explicitly mentioned, if Sony continues its trend of incremental upgrades—1000mAh (XM3), 1100mAh (XM4), and 1200mAh (XM5)—we could see another slight boost in battery life.

Several key details are still unknown. It has not been confirmed whether Sony will return the foldable design from the WH-1000XM4 or stick with the rigid frame introduced with the WH-1000XM5. Likewise, potential improvements to ANC (Active Noise Cancellation) and audio performance remain a mystery—we don’t yet know if Sony has developed new drivers or enhanced noise processing for this model.
It’s worth noting that the FCC filing identifies the XM6 as an "engineering prototype," meaning some features could change before the final production model is released. However, with the confidentiality period ending in July, a mid-2025 announcement seems likely—potentially marking three years since the XM5’s debut.

For now, the WH-1000XM6 remains a mystery, but if these latest developments are anything to go by, Sony is preparing to refine and evolve its flagship wireless headphones. As always, we’ll wait to see if they live up to expectaations when they officially launch.
Stay tuned for more updates as they emerge.
