Thorens Announces TD 124 DD & SPU 124 Limited Edition 140th Anniversary Combo

Thorens' TD 124 DD returned in 2020 and now receives special 140th-anniversary upgrades alongside a reworked TP 124 arm and SPU124 cartridge.
Thorens brought back its legendary TD 124, which saw active service since the 50s, as the TD 124 DD in 2020, with the reissue possessing "the same musicality and future-proofness [as its predecessor], along with a newly developed world-class tonearm, the TP 124". However, Thorens continued with its research with its resulting findings culminating in the new anniversary player, the TD 124 DD 140th Anniversary.
The Thorens TD 124 DD 140th Anniversary features a new two-layer platter, which connects the already heavy aluminium platter of the 124 DD with a five-millimetre-thick layer of solid copper, resulting in increased mass and, so we're told, the interaction of two different materials cancel out each other's resonances. Additionally, Thorens tells us that the original platter bearing was already generously over-dimensioned for the TD 124 DD, as was the drive, so these are the same as you will find in the standard version, as should both be fine with the extra load.
Furthermore, the TP 124 tonearm wiring benefits from upgraded high-purity silver wire linking the cartridge to the outputs, which should provide a positive impact, especially with the special version of the brand's SPU 124, produced by Ortofon with coils made of pure silver.
Lovers of classic analogue audio will undoubtedly also appreciate the Bakelite housing, which is a lovely touch. This limited-edition MC cartridge is only available as a package with the TD 124 DD 140th Anniversary. Otherwise, the torsion-resistant arm tube and SME headshell coupling remain unaltered from the 2020 model.
Thoren's final update for the TD 124 DD 140th Anniversary model is the real wood veneer which not only graces the plinth, but the armboard is also treated to high-gloss lacquered and hand-polished wood.
Limited to just 140 units, the Thorens TD 124 DD 140th Anniversary model set, including the SPU 124 Anniversary, is priced at €11,999 and available from October 2023.

applause awards
Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.
Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.
The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.
We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
