Volumio's new Motivo is a one-stop headphone amplifier with a unique aesthetic perfect for desktop systems. The streamer features an 8-inch touchscreen interface wrapped in a statement industrial design.

However, this isn't the first time we've seen Motivo. It was unveiled at High End Munich 2019, and the Italian company sought crowd input on the final details. Under the hood is a Sabre ES9038 DAC, handing the Motivo the required chops to handle high-res audio files in addition to its dual output analogue XLR balanced and RCA unbalanced outputs.

The USB port supports PCM files up to 32-bit/768kHz and DSD512, while the coax, I2S over HDMI, and optical outputs support up to 24-bit/384kHz PCM and DSD256.The USB port also enables the Motivo to play and rip CDs, as long as you have an external USB CD drive.

In addition to its raft of digital hardwired connections, this stylish piece of kit offers Bluetooth 5.0 alongside wi-fi streaming support for Qobuz, Spotify Connect, and TIDAL Connect. It also has skills with Google Cast, AirPlay (via Shairport Sync), and the ability to play to a Sonos endpoint.

Volumio's designated app manages playback and streaming, including multiroom. The Italian company also teases a music discovery app that uses artificial intelligence to digitally curate songs via its AI DJ.

The Motivo also plays nicely with analogue outputs, covering this attribute with balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA ports. The headphone outputs utilise the XLR ports and offer high and low-impedance options.

And while the spotlight lands squarely upon the dominant 8-inch touchscreen but the contemporary design tops this off with a large red control knob and an anodised aluminium body.
