We Are Rewind Brings Back the Boombox with GB-001

Cassette culture it seems is officially back in full swing—and We Are Rewind is leading the charge with its boldest product yet. Unveiled ahead of the 2025 High End Munich show, the new GB-001 isn’t just a trip down memory lane; it’s a fully reimagined, next-gen boombox that packs some credible sonic punch into a nostalgic silhouette.
Hot on the heels of Edith—the stylish portable cassette player StereoNET covered earlier this month—We Are Rewind is upping the ante with a system that doesn’t just play tapes, but makes a strong case for ditching your Bluetooth speaker altogether. The GB-001 revives the golden-age boombox with a neo-retro design and modern internals that are anything but vintage.
Whether playing your carefully curated tape collection or streaming wirelessly via Bluetooth 5.4, the GB-001 delivers serious sound via four Hi-Fi loudspeakers, including dual woofers and soft dome tweeters for clear highs and extended bass. But this isn’t just a speaker system—it’s a studio in a box. There's support for both Type I and Type II (chrome) tapes, user-adjustable motor speed, an active AC erase head, and Dolby B-style noise reduction for cleaner sound on pre-recorded cassettes.
Also on board are dual backlit VU meters, pitch control, EQ knobs, and even a microphone input with level control for live recording, karaoke, or your next rap battle. We Are Rewind claims you can even use the GB-001 as an amp for a plugged-in guitar, handy for a spur-of-the-moment busking session! More likely to be used will be the 3.5mm stereo input, allowing connection to turntables, phones, or just about anything else you’d want to feed through this retro-styled mini-powerhouse.
Under the bonnet, two Class D amps drive the woofers at 32W RMS each, with another pair delivering 20W RMS to the tweeters. Battery life is rated at up to 15 hours on AUX and 10 hours in tape mode, with a user-replaceable 14.8V lithium-ion battery ensuring longevity. At 6.81 kg and measuring just over 50cm wide with the handle, the GB-001 is portable without being puny—ready to take centre stage at your next backyard hang or impromptu studio session.
The We Are Rewind GB-001 is available from late May 2025 and priced at £379 / €449.
