Yamaha TW-E7B True Sound & TW-ES5A Sports Buds Announced
Yamaha announces TW-E7B True Sound ANC buds alongside its first-ever sports earphones, the TW-ES5A.
The TW-E7B and TW-ES5A offer the company's True Sound and Listening Care technologies. In addition, E7B adds Yamaha's special active noise cancellation, while the ES5A boasts IPX7 water and sweat resistance, as well as sporty silicone fins to keep the buds in place while you're doing fitness stuff.
Just as in the recently-announced E5B, Yamaha states that its True Sound tech combines acoustic and digital technologies to render the music "as the artist intended". Meanwhile. Listening Care balances the frequency extremes during low-volume listening, meaning you don't have to go loud not to miss out on those bits. In the long run, the aim is that preventing unnecessary volume will help preserve your hearing.
While the streamlined ES5A has the standard Listening Care, the E7B boasts Listening Care – Advanced. This is said to factor in the content volume (such as dynamic range and recording levels) and background noise to optimise the sound at any level, hopefully further preventing you from nudging the volume upwards.
Moreover, Yamaha asserts that its noise cancellation is unique thanks to the company's algorithm. Where some solutions will affect the music as well as noise, Yamaha says that its ANC system analyses the signal received from the internal mic and the playback music signal, calculating and filtering the noise components out to leave the music signal untouched. The result is that it doesn't have to compensate via EQ correction as with most other ANC systems.
The E7B is loaded with 10mm drivers with the housing features acoustic holes to control the airflow and, says Yamaha, maximise performance. Further enhancement comes in the shape of an app-based Listening Optimiser function that analyses the shape of the inside of your ear and adjusts the sound to compensate.
Both sets of wireless buds benefit from Qualcomm Clear Voice Capture (cVc) and TrueWireless Mirroring; the latter does away with the old 'Slave and Master' system and instead enables independent transmission from music sources to each earbud. Also, low-latency Gaming Mode makes playing games or watching videos much better.
The battery stamina is six hours for the E7B buds, plus another 16 from the charging case. As the ES5A doesn't have to power ANC (and should be fitter), you get nine hours from the buds and 25 from the case.
The Yamaha TW-ES5A and TW-E7B launch in July/ August, costing £149 and £219, respectively.

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.
Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.
The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.
We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality.
