ARCAM SAYS LONG LIVE THE COMPACT DISC!

"CD is not dead!" screams the press release from Arcam's Cambridge, UK headquarters. The brand has vowed to continue supporting the format which has delivered high-quality musical fidelity now since 1982.

The compact disc was revolutionary at the time given that the 120mm plastic disc could store 80 minutes of uncompressed audio (or 700Mb of data), which by comparison, the typical computer hard drive could only store 10Mb!

CDs can now be picked up brand new at crazy prices, often for as little as $1, and just like when people started dumping their LP collections with the introduction of CD, now's the time to browse Gumtree and eBay for those big collections. As the resurgence of vinyl continues, we can't help but think about the irony of it all!

Which is why Arcam's new HDA range of integrated amps, and SACD player is good buying right now!

When it comes to hammering out value-for-money amps and an SACD player the calibre of its new SA10 and SA20 integrated amps and CDS50 SACD/CD player, we'd say Arcam has nailed it!

The latter is a well-endowed machine and will handle network streaming duties as well as making sweet sounds spinning SACD or CDs.

Arcam say it's combined SACD/CD CDS50 is the brand's finest spinner it's ever produced, period!

Arcam backs up this claim by pointing out that an ESS Sabre 9038 Reference DAC technology lurks inside along with a precision re-clocking system and a specially designed power supply.

It will play all disc formats, including SACD, CD-A, CD-R and CD-RW, supports audio file formats including FLAC, WAV, AIFF, OGG, MP3, AAC and WMA, combined with a USB input, and allows streaming through the music life app.

It also features both single-ended and XLR output connections. Other handy features include two digital inputs, one optical and one SPDIF.

The perfect match for the two new integrated amplifiers comprising the HDA range, the CDS50 is available now for just $1,499 RRP.

Right now, there's a promotion that offers even further savings by bundling the CDS50 with either of the two Integrated Amplifiers.

Bundle 1 includes the CDS50 and SA10 Integrated Amplifier for just $2,795 (Normally $3,190), while Bundle 2 includes CDS50 and more powerful SA20 Integrated Amplifier is only $2,995 (Normally $3,490).

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
