ESTELON LYNX SMART SPEAKERS AVAILABLE IN JULY

This time last year we reported on the Estelon Lynx smart speakers. If, like us, you were intrigued by these imposing ‘intelligent’ speakers then the good news is that they are set for global launch in July 2018.

If you are not familiar with these strangely attractive speakers, let me start by telling you that all you need are a pair of Lynx active speakers and a smart device. No DAC, no amps, no snake-pit of cables. Now, before you start proclaiming that wireless audio has no place in high-end speakers, Estelon may, in fact, prove you wrong. Recall our recent Goldmund review where we touched on this topic.

The Estelon Lynx is a simple plug-and-play solution. Other than the speakers and a smart device, the only requirement is a router for Ethernet or Wi-Fi connectivity. This amazing ability is all down to the integrated high-resolution HQPlayer that was specially developed for Estelon by Signalyst. The HQPlayer works as a DSD rendering engine, converting everything to a DSD64 stream. As one of the fundamental features of DSD bitstream is its capability to have the analogue signal reconstructed by simple analogue low-pass filtering, the Lynxes can get away with no signal processing at the amplification stage whatsoever. Talking about amplification, part of the integrated kit are two 260 watt power amps.

The phase and amplitude accuracy of DSD is comparable to the best analogue recordings, while the digital domain allows the lossless transport of the data. At any point, by ‘simply’ re-clocking the bitstream to DSD bitrate, you end up with an extremely close rendering of the original recording (if it started its life as DSD, of course).

The reason for the router requirement is simply because the audio data transport in the speakers takes place wirelessly, over the 2Ghz and 5Ghz Wi-Fi network. From there a dedicated radio chipset constantly aligns the phase and timing of the DSD clock pulses on all the speakers connected to the system.

In Estelon Intelligent Audio, re-clocking of the DSD data is done with sub-picosecond jitter precision, while the synchronisation between the channels over the air is approaching the sub-microsecond domain. This signal is then run through a precision FET driver bridge connected directly to the speaker (analogue) crossover.

Additionally, all that tech is combined with arguably the world’s best digital music software – Roon. That also means you can stream Tidal through the Lynx speakers as well as from your digital library stored on a NAS.

It’s not only the use of phone and tablets that make the Lynx ‘smart’. There is also the fact that the speakers are height adjustable. This makes them able to deliver an accurate and detailed soundscape in room sizes from 16-100 square metres. Now, that’s clever.

As well as all that tech, inside each of the composite cabinets are a 10-inch woofer, a pair of 5-inch mids and choice of a 1-inch Beryllium or Diamond tweeter, and a 1.5-inch diamond inverted dome tweeter. All this for a claimed frequency response of 20Hz-40kHz.

Available in white pearl gloss and black matte, and ultimate black gloss and black matte, the Estelon Lynx is priced from €40,000.

Check out the Estelon Lynx and Extreme out at Munich's High-End show. Hourly presentations every day starting from 11.00. Room F-216, Atrium 4. MOC.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
