Falcon Acoustics Now More Accessible in Australia

Melbourne-based Fundamental Audio has been growing its brand portfolio recently has now been appointed the exclusive Australian distributor for Falcon Acoustics, the team behind the legendary BBC LS3/5a loudspeaker.

Falcon Acoustics was founded in 1972 by former KEF Senior Development Engineer Malcolm Jones. As the first employee of KEF in 1961, Malcolm went on to design the now legendary KEF drive units B139, B200, B110, T15, T27, and the systems in which they were incorporated. In 1974, after just completing the famous Reference Series 104, he left KEF to work full time at Falcon Acoustics. In 2009 Malcolm retired and transferred Falcon to the current owner, Jerry Bloomfield.

The award-winning Falcon Acoustics Classic 15 ohm Gold Badge LS3/5a Gold Badge is fully Licensed by the BBC and hand-assembled by Falcon in Oxford, England. The company says it is the only LS3/5a in production that faithfully replicates the original BBC design published in October 1976.

The drive units for the Gold Badge LS3/5a are the renowned Falcon B110 and the Falcon T27 tweeter. Designed again by Malcolm Jones to ensure total authenticity, they are handmade by Falcon in the UK to ensure the highest quality, grading, and consistency.

The Gold Badge crossover is made exclusively by Falcon and features matched 15 ohm BBC Specification FL6/23 filter networks in the original transformer-style to BBC Specification. The inductors and capacitors are specially made in Britain for Falcon to the original BBC Specification.

The Italian-made cabinets are made from specially selected graded Baltic Ply and use Beech fillets, matching BBC Specification. They are available in European Walnut, Black Ash, Rosewood, and Burr Walnut natural wood veneers with a Tygan Cloth front grille.

Anthony Camplone, Operations Manager of Fundamental Audio, told StereoNET:

We are honoured and excited to represent such an iconic brand which has achieved a cult following worldwide. Especially this year as they celebrate their 50th Anniversary. The LS3/5a has a wonderful history and is enjoyed as much by music lovers today as it was back in 1976.

Falcon Acoustics LS3/5a’s are sold in matched pairs only, supplied with an Instruction Manual, Individually Numbered Certificate of Authenticity, and come with a 5-year Guarantee.

StereoNET Reviewed the Falcon Acoustics LS3/5a back in 2020, concluding:

Headbangers and clubbers need not apply, but if you're already an LS3/5a fan, or simply looking for something a bit special for a smallish listening room, then the Falcon Acoustics version has real appeal. Joyous on vocals and acoustic or orchestral music, it's also surprisingly capable with other genres too. It oozes class yet isn't too sophisticated for its own good. And best of all, this is surely the finest version of an iconic design – at a surprisingly affordable price. Hear it if you possibly can.

Stock is expected to arrive in Australia in the next few days, and pricing will be confirmed at that time.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
