Focal Chora Additions Include First Dolby Atmos Offering - CES 2020

Focal has announced its move into Dolby Atmos at CES 2020 among its three new Chora models.

The French speaker specialist has revealed its first Dolby Atmos-enabled speaker to Consumer Electronics Show-goers.

The additions to the French firm's Chora range, launched in September, include its first Dolby Atmos design. The Chora 826-D, Chora Center and Chora Surround make up the new home cinema offerings with the new Sub 600p subwoofer completing the launch line-up.

The headline-grabbing Chora 826-D is the new reference product for the range and is the first time that Focal has incorporated Dolby Atmos technology in a floorstanding loudspeaker. The Chora 826-D sports an upward-firing driver that delivers the height channels of the Atmos soundtrack.

Focal has designed the driver to direct the sound towards the ceiling at a carefully calculated angle so that it reflects around the entire room.

Focal Chora Centre - CES 2020

The Chora Center, whose job it is to reproduce dialogue with exceptional clarity and precision, is available with an optional stand, but will equally be at home on an AV unit. Whereas, the Chora Surround can be easily wall-mounted and designed for rear- and side-channel action.

Finally, bringing the low-end to the party is the 600-watt Sub 600P subwoofer.

Just as their more established Chora stablemates, the newcomers to the range are equipped with Focal's Slatefiber cones which use a fusion of thermoplastic polymer and recycled non-woven carbon fibres. These are partnered by Chora exclusive aluminium-magnesium TNF tweeters. The sub, meanwhile, utilises a more substantial and more rigid Polyflex cone, better suited for delivering low-end impact.

Suggested retail pricing is TBC but will fit with the positioning of the Chora range, which launched last year and is available now from £600-£1299. Chora loudspeakers are offered in Black, Light Wood, and Dark Wood finishes.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
