HIDIZS Launches New Planar Magnetic Earphones Inspired by Whales
Chi-fi brand HIDIZS will soon be launching its Kickstarter project for the company’s newest MP145 planar magnetic earphones, which come with a unique design based on a whale’s tail and rorqual pleats.
The MP145’s shell is made out of an aluminium alloy, with advanced moulding and five-axis CNC milling used in the production process to obtain the distinct milling pattern for the rorqual pleats, otherwise known as the folds on a whale’s underbelly. On the topmost layer, there’s a gorgeous three-pronged icon that’s designed after a whale’s tail fins, with ventilation ports under it, which HIDIZS calls the Bionic Breathing Holes in an apparent nod to the whale’s breathing hole.
HIDISZ received assistance in the design details of the MP145 from the Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC) charity, and the company is supporting the charity’s work in partnership and helping to raise awareness of the role whales play in keeping the oceans healthy.
Inside, there is a whopping 14.5mm planar magnetic driver, which is definitely one of the bigger drivers on the market right now. There are 7+7 N52H magnets arranged in a symmetrical magnetic circuit, which HIDIZS claims will offer lower harmonic distortion, enhanced magnetic circuit efficiency and a maximum magnetic flux of close to 1 Tesla at the magnetic gap for crystal clear sound.
Additionally, the sound of the MP145 can be tweaked through HIDIZS’ pneumatic sound tuning filters, three of which are included in the package. There are also different ear tips included that are designed to emphasise the lows, mids and highs, resulting in nine possible combinations.
With a 104dB sensitivity and 30 ohms impedance, the MP145 will work fine with a smartphone and dongle, but also just as well with a DAP or amp. HIDIZS also offers the choice between a 3.5mm single-ended or 4.4mm balanced termination during purchase, which is fantastic, and it’s paired with a 1.2m-long four-strand silver-plated copper cable that comes with 0.78mm 2-pin connectors.
The HIDIZS MP145 will be priced at US$149 at retail, although a limited special early bird offer will be available on the Kickstarter page at US$109.

applause awards
Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.
Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.
The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.
We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
